All Hallows High School is a Catholic boys high school in The Bronx, New York. Located near Yankee Stadium, at 111 East 164th Street, the school has an enrollment of approximately 580 boys, 99% of whom are students of color.[1] Despite sitting in the poorest Congressional district in the country, All Hallows routinely places its entire graduating class in four-year colleges. The Wall Street Journal has called the school's success in this area "stunning."[2] The Acton Institute recently named All Hallows as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the Unites States.[3]

[edit] History and Philosophy

All Hallows was founded in 1909 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers. The order founded the school upon the principles of Blessed Edmund Rice, which center on providing moral and scholastic training, especially to the children of the poor. Originally located at 13-15 West 124th in Manhattan, the school moved to its current location in 1929. For much of its history, All Hallows was an elementary school as well as a high school, but it has been exclusively the latter since 1977. The school has more than 10,000 graduates.

All Hallows will celebrate its centennial in 2009.

[edit] Academic Program

All Hallows offers a college preparatory program, along with four years of religious study. The curriculum includes several innovative programs. Freshmen, for example, take a writing class developed in conjunction with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History that delves into primary documents and that visits historical sites. The school offers its students advanced placement courses in English literature, Spanish and U.S. history; it also offers electives in physics, chemistry, African-American culture, Latin, marketing, psychology, political science, creative writing, mythology and epics, business law, as well as calculus. Students take classes not offered by the school through a videoconference center for distance learning.

Because service is central to the Edmund Rice view of education, All Hallows makes community service part of its curriculum. The amount of service that the school requires of students escalates with grade level: Freshmen give 10 hours, while seniors give 50. A tutoring program is also mandatory, as is a daily reading hour known as the Drop Everything and Read ("DEAR") program. The DEAR program was developed by principal Sean Sullivan and English department chairman Paul Fontana.

This DEAR program has garnered national recognition. On March 2, 2007, All Hallows was awarded a $50,000 Pageturner Champion Award in recognition of the program, as well as the high graduation and college matriculation rates at All Hallows.[4] In explaining its decision, The Pageturner Organization, a charitable entity founded by James Patterson, pointed to gains in test scores made by All Hallows students since the program was instituted: verbal SAT scores went up 16%, while AP English scores went up 40%.

[edit] Sport and Activities

All Hallows students participate in more than 40 sports and activities; these include a newspaper (The Blue and White), Kendo and chess teams, Big Brothers, as well as "El Club Latino." In Spring 2006, the varsity baseball team won a Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) championship, and, in Winter 2007, the Freshmen basketball team also won a CHSAA championship. The teams are called The Gaels, although the mascot-emblem looks more like a leprechaun weilding a shillelagh.

[edit] The All Hallows Foundation

In 1997, graduates of the school set up The All Hallows Foundation, a 501(C)(3) organized for the purpose of supporting the school and the surrounding neighborhood. The board of directors for the All Hallows Foundation is comprised of All Hallows graduates who have achieved notable success in fields such as finance, technology, law, television, and potato farming.

The Foundation provides funds for a scholarship fund that allows talented, but impoverished young men to attend All Hallows. It also supports facility renovations and improvements, a faculty endowment and community outreach programs. Philip J. Eagan [1], the board chairman of the All Hallows Foundation applies his background in finance to bring "a bold, entrepreneurial, and creative approach to inner city education.”[5]

In December of 2006, the Foundation received an anonymously donated check for 2 million dollars. The donation was made by a graduate of the school.[6]
