Talk:Almeida Garrett
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
_ _ Full name "João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida Garrett" per article; dubbed (and ennobled as?) Visconde de Almeida Garrett. His confusing name situation needs clarification. My take is that "Almeida" is a given name, not the first half of a surname "Almeida Garrett", and that "vicount of Almeida" is kind of a pun, since his given name is the name of a place in Portugal. I note that the 6th ed'n of Columbia Encyclopedia makes him "Garrett, Joao Batista de Almeida" and EB on line makes him "Garrett, João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida, Visconde (viscount) De Almeida Garrett" (as well as "João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida Garrett, viscount de Almeida Garrett").
_ _ I expect someone who can at least read Portuguese can judge this better than i, and will work out wording that will make it clearer than the article now does for the rest of us.

- I'm not sure about the name, but almeida is a place indeed and that would make sense since he could be made viscount of "the place". most people got Almeida in their names for serving military service there. Galf 19:19, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
