AMPA is a specific agonist for AMPA receptor.
AMPA mimics the effect of glutamate. There are two broad categories of glutamate receptors: AMPA receptors and NMDA receptors. In the synapse these receptors are believed to serve very different purposes. AMPA can be used in experiments to distinguish the actvity of one receptor from the other in order to understand their function.
