Amyl nitrate is also known as 1-pentyl nitrate,[1] and is often confused with the inhalant drug amyl nitrite. Amyl nitrate is used as an additive in diesel fuel, where it acts as an 'ignition improver' by decreasing the time it takes before the fuel ignites.
