Andoni Goikoetxea Olaskoaga (born Alonsotegui, Vizcaya, May 23, 1956), also known as Goikoetxea or Goiko, is a Spanish/Basque footballer and coach. He played as a defender for Bilbao Athletic, Athletic Club de Bilbao, Atlético Madrid, Spain and the Euskadi XI. Among the followers of Athletic Club, he is also known as El Gigante de Alonsotegui (Alonsotegui's Giant).
Goikoetxea began his playing career as a youth with Arbuyo before joining Athletic Bilbao in 1974. Before establishing himself in the senior team, he played for the reserve team Bilbao Athletic. During the 1980s, along with Dani, Manuel Sarabia, Txato Nuñez, Txetxu Gallego, and Andoni Zubizarreta, he was a prominent member of the successful Athletic Bilbao team coached by Javier Clemente. In 1983 the club won La Liga and in 1984 they won a La Liga/Copa del Rey double. He is perhaps best remembered for his infamous tackle on Diego Maradona in a La Liga match at the Camp Nou on September 24 1983. Goikoetxea tackled Maradona from behind, leaving him severely injured. Goikoetxea, whose hardman image came to personify Clemente’s Athletic team, subsequently became known as the Butcher of Bilbao. During his time at Athletic he played 369 games and scored 44 goals. After leaving Athletic in 1987, Goikoetxea played for three seasons with Atlético Madrid before retiring as a player in 1990.
Goikoetxea also played 39 times for Spain, making his debut against Holland on February 16 1983. He represented Spain at both 1984 European Football Championship and the 1986 FIFA World Cup. During the latter competition he scored one of his four international goals in the game against Denmark. He also played 2 games for the Euskadi XI in 1979 and 1988.
Since retiring as a player he has coached several teams in La Liga and the Segunda División including UD Salamanca (1996-98, 2004-05), SD Compostela (1998-99), CD Numancia (1990-2000, 2005-06), Racing de Santander (2000-01) and Rayo Vallecano (2001-02). In 1996/97 he guided UD Salamanca to La Liga promotion after they finished second in the Segunda División. He was also the Second Coach of the Spanish national team under the Head Coach Javier Clemente during the World Cup held in the United States in 1994.
