Musical Nationalism article rewrite/revamp
Couple of points to hit:
- Nationalism is not so much a condition as an attitude. For example the mere presence of a natonional idiom in a melodic line is insufficient to identify a piece or a composer with the nationalist school--you can find such things in the Renaissance--it is the attitude of the composer in using that material to distinguish his piece from what was being written elsewhere (especially Germany).
- There was a parallel interest, often by the same composers who used native idioms, in exoticism: the use of idioms from completely foreign cultures. A lot of composers, for example, wrote Spanish rhapsodies/symphonies/suites. Russian composers used idioms from regions recently conquered, such as Central Asia and the Far East, to define their "Russianness". Many composers became interested in music of Indonesia and the Far East.
