[edit] Gameplay

The player, playing as a monkey working for Specter, must work up from junior class, to senior class by playing mini games and breaking the criteria for each level. In each grade, there are 9 mini games to complete. Failing to reach the criteria rewards you with an X, reaching the criteria rewards a O, like naughts and crosses.

Each level has a certain number of lines to pass the grade (one line consists of 3 naughts, either horizontally, vertically or diagonal.) The game also offers review lessons, for a player that has almost made the requirements. Usually these are a previous level the player has failed.

[edit] Selected Mini-Games

The mini games are divided into 4 categories: Mind, Body, Tech and Special

[edit] Mind

[edit] Ask Darwin

A game where a player must answer questions given to them. Each question has 4 possible answers, with one being correct. The player must press the button that corresponds with the correct answer. There is a set time limit on each question. The questions are generally basic, such as Not 31 Days? or What question is this?

[edit] Banana Guardia

The player has to protect a big banana in the middle of the arena. The player can move around the banana, and must fend off other monkeys from reaching the middle using a slingshot and a 'bananarang'.

[edit] Salvage

A minigame which involves turning the PSP on the side. The player moves a boat using the directional buttons, and dives down to attempt to reach the treasure. Once a player has dived, they can't change their direction, so they must read the current first. The direction and speed of the current is displayed by moving lines.

[edit] Tech

[edit] Mon Quixote

The player has a shield, and must fend off incoming arrows using the analog nub. If an arrow hits the player, it is game over. The arrows come from the sky, and vary in speed.

[edit] Bombermonkey

A mini-game where bombs are thrown at the player. The player has to catch the bombs and hand them other to the side. The bombs can slip when the player catches it, and then explodes after a certain amount of time. If a player gets caught in the blast, its game over.

[edit] Monkey Bowling

A mini game where the player rolls a ball at 10 monkeys. The player can select the position they stand at, the power of the ball, and the curve of the ball. The idea is to hit all 10 monkeys to get a strike. The story mode involves going through rounds to hit all the monkeys, whereas in the "mini game" collection, the objective is to beat the computer and gain a high score.

For scoring rules, see bowling.

[edit] Body

[edit] Hammer Throw

Just like hammer throw in real life. You have to wind up your shot, and then press the 0 button to release. Winding up is done by rotating the Analog stick to gain power. If the player takes too long however, they will foul and get no score. The score is how far the player throws, with the monkey attached to it. The player also has to land correctly for extra distance.

[edit] Monkey Balancing

The player has a group of monkeys balanced on each other, fully vertically, and must make their way to the goal on the right side of the screen. In order to complete this goal, the player must use balancing skills, making the monkeys move backwards in order for them to sway forwards. This mini game requires some skill.

[edit] Monkey Football

Similar to a game in Ape Escape 2 of the same name. The player plays against a computer opposition, and only the goalkeeper are selectable. The ball is bounced off walls, and the player can select the amount of power for each shot when they have the ball. To save, the player must position themselves so the ball hits them instead of going past. To score a goal, the player must make the ball go past the opposition goalkeeper. The winner is the player with the highest score, just like normal soccer.

[edit] Reaction

The game received generally poor reviews, averaging just 55% on Game Rankings.[1] Many reviewers critisized how hard some of the mini-games were, as the controls were not explained fully, and just about always led to a failed first few attempts, as people would fail the mini game without understanding the controls properly. However, most reviewers liked the variations in mini games available.
