The archaeotourism or Archaeological tourism is an alternative form of cultural tourism that, within the frame of tourist activities, aims to promote the passion for historical-archaeological and the conservation of the historical sites.
Much credit goes to investigator Georgeos Diaz-Montexano who initiated a series of publications in 1995 about ArchaeoTourism, in several magazines of History and Archaeology like "Arqueología y Enigmas de la Historia", "Arqueología Sin Fronteras", "La Esfinge. Revista de Egiptologia" and "ArqueoHistoria", and shortly after founded the first specialized society on Archaeotourism, ArqueoTour (2000). For this reason he is considered by some to be the found er of archaeotourism.
Like the Ecological tourism or Ecotourism the archaeotourism or Archaeological tourism is promoted like an ethical-historical tourism, in which also it is conceited like fundamental the well-being of the historical-archaeological patrimony of the local populations, allowing the development of cultural associations, companies and cooperatives that dedicate themselves to offer this type of services of added value.
The best definition of which it is the archaeological tourism or archaeotourism can be found it in the own words of its founders:
- The passion by the past is something inherent to the human being. As it says well: «Town that does not know from where town comes that does not know to where it goes».
- The Archaeotourism or archaeological tourism is ideal for which they look for a higher knowledge and sublimates, tie to the meditation and the relaxation, in perfect syntony with the surroundings or ecosystem that is, integration with the Mother Nature, but always in old places, next to the ruins of the "enigmatic missing civilizations".
- Sites and places magician-monks or asylums. From the most remote prehistoric times. From the era of the dinosaurios to the Medieval Age. In order to develop his activities it has a nourished group of authentic experts in each one of the matters.
- Therefore, archaeologists, paleontologists, anthropologists, historians and specialists in trips will unite their knowledge under a same objective: to offer to the traveller a wonderful and unforgettable experience, an intensive course and of introduction to each one of these manifestations of the human knowledge. This way the visitor will not be a simple traveller, will be in addition an apprentice in sciences to the past.
- Some times will feel a paleontologist discovering tracks of dinosaurious and others will feel like Indiana Jones in the Damn Temple, mainly when penetrating in the mysterious caverns and artificial caves that long ago served from temples our ancestors. Enigmatic places loaded of an atmosphere of magic and mystery that, sometimes, surpass to all fiction created by the cinema...

Archaeological tourism includes all those products associated with the public archaeological promotion, including visits to archaeological sites, museums, interpretation centers, spectacles of historical recreation, the rediscovery of native products, festivals of theater.
Although archaeological tourism is quite recent, many international institutions and governments have already begun to contemplate viable alternative activity for the sustainable economic-social development. Several countries, in fact, have for years had programs resembling the main points of Archaeological tourism for economic income, such as Egypt, Mexico and Peru.
