When everything seems complicated, try to remove some constraints from the problem you are digging in. e.g. what if u had an infinite source of money, what if you could write a paper as long as you wanted it to be, what if there was no constraint of time.
Try to get out of all the prejudices. Start from zero/scratch. If you could do it all on your own, how would you do it?
Everything can be seen from a lot of perspectives. The same problem appears as different to a mathematician, a politician or a psychiatrist. Try to look at the problem from different ways. This is easier said than done. To look at a problem from a different point of view is usually very difficult. One good thing to do is to change the aim. e.g. A researcher usually wants to write what he has found, A reviewer will want to know what is new in the paper and he doesn't have much time. Hence, to write an effecitive paper one should imagine himself as being a reviewer. To do that, he should suppose that he is a busy person who has to find what's new and interesting in the paper as fast as he can. Now, if the paper is written with that persepective, it will be entirely different.
Identifying the problem is one of the most important part of being a good problem-solver. e.g. You know that you think a lot and come up with very interesting ideas but time and again you forget about these. If you console yourself saying that I was made this way, that's the end of the story. But if you think of it as a problem, you can think of solving this problem. For example, you can note the idea down any time it occurs to you. You can go thru it later on.
When you are thinking of a particular thing and don't know where to start from, try asking various questions , any thing ( from as simple as who, why, how, when etc. to what if, what's the worst case, best case etc ).
Do time-taking tasks iteratively. Improve the quality in cycles.
When some problem is bugging you, you might want to do something about it and start working on it as quickly as you can. But wait!!!! Don't do it. Don't do anything without proper planning. Brainstorm, Mindmap, think laterally, identify problem domain, affecting factors, make an algorithm and then start working on it.
