Area code 641
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area Code 641 is a telephone area code for a central portion of Iowa. The code is shaped similar to a large J. The 641 area code was split off from the Area code 515 in 2000.
The 641 area code was notable in that it marked the first time that a new area code had been created in Iowa since the establishment of the North American Numbering Plan in the 1940's.
Another notable feature is the presence of large number of calling call and conference service providers operating in this area. the way it works, when you call a number to rural area in 641 area code, your long distance provider have to pay the fee to the receiving telecom party the termination fee, may be up to 8 cents a min. Using this arbitrage, some of the service providers operate here and require you to dial the 'local access number' in 641 area code. Large telecom providers are most hit with these so called free service providers. ATT filed a suit to withhold these arbtrage payments (ATT got a $2million bill in a month). (March 2007)
