Arlie Russell Hochschild

Arlie Russell Hochschild (born 15 January 1940) is a professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States. She is the author of several books and numerous articles, including The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work (1997) and The Second Shift, which discuss the dual labor by women in both the general economy and within the household. According to her research, the first is rewarded less than the labor of men, while the second is completely unpaid. Arguably her most influential work to the field of sociology has been Emotion Work, Feeling Rules and Social Structure (1979) and subsequently The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling (1983). She is married to Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold's Ghost.
She introduced the ideas of feeling rules and time bind.
