Armaldo (アーマルド Āmarudo?) is a fictional character in the Pokémon franchise. It is a Rock- and Bug-dual-type Pokémon and #348 in the National Pokédex.
Armaldo's name is a conjunction of the words armor and Anomalocarid which it is based on. Its name also sounds like armadillo, another armored animal.

[edit] Biological characteristics
Armaldo was a Pokémon that lived in prehistoric times and became extinct soon afterwards, but it has been reincarnated through fossil-resurrection technology. In its heavily textured, scaled appearance it is similar to a bipedal version of the ancient sea dwelling Anomalocarid, which this Pokémon, or at least its pre-evolution Anorith, was most likely based on.
Armaldo's armor is very tough, making many attacks against it seem to bounce off. The frontal claws are freely extendable and contractible, and the Pokémon can wield enough propulsional force in its claws to punch through a slab of steel. The fact that Armaldo walks on its hind legs suggests that it was able to live on land as well as water, as it does now, and in fact Armaldo prefers land as its residence and the ocean as its hunting ground. The beetle-like back-wings it uses for swimming underwater, and its claws it uses to skewer its prey before feeding.
Armaldo's tail bears a striking resemblance to Lugia's, though the two Pokemon are not related.

Armaldo is only obtained from evolution from Anorith at level 40, and Anorith is obtained only from processing the Claw fossil found in the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald versions, when choosing it over the Root fossil that begets Lileep.
Armaldo has a very high Attack and Defense, average Special Attack and Special Defense, and low Speed. Attacks used against Armaldo can't be critical due to its innate ability. Armaldo is among the few non-Legendary Pokémon with considerable power (such Pokémon include Slaking and Snorlax with their massive Attack and HP, respectively). Armaldo is preferred by the Pokémon Colosseum boss Miror B. It can learn several Special techniques like Water Pulse, but its low Special Attack lowers the usefulness of these moves. Armaldo excels as a physical sweeper, using powerful moves to knock out its opponents. While its speed is not the best, its defenses allow it to withstand many attacks, even a lot of super-effective hits. Using the move Baton Pass to give Armaldo a boost in speed would make it very powerful and difficult to defeat. Armaldo's types protect it from many weaknesses, Bug covering the Grass, Ground and Fighting weaknesses of Rock and Rock covering the Flying and Fire weaknesses of Bug. Steel, Water and Rock attacks are still effective against it.
In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Armaldo has gained a few new powerful moves. It receives the Bug-type attack Scissor Cross as its last level-up attack, finally giving it a much-needed powerful Bug move. Ancient Power is no longer a viable move, being Special in nature now, but Rock Slide and Stone Edge replace it as the Rock moves of choice. Armaldo can also learn Rock Cart from a TM, giving a speed-boosting technique. Through breeding it can learn the powerful Cross Poison attack, which may poison a foe and has a high critical hit ratio. These additions make Armaldo an even more dangerous beast.
[edit] In the Pokémon anime
The Pokémon anime series and films are a meta-series of adventures separate from the canon that most of the Pokémon video games follow (except Pokémon Yellow[1]). The anime follows the quest of Ash Ketchum[2]—a Pokémon trainer as he and several other companions[2] travel around the world of Pokémon along with their Pokémon partners Pikachu, Togepi, Blaziken,[3] and Piplup.[4]
Armaldo appeared in the same episode as Cradily: Episode 379: 'Where's Armaldo?'. In it, it was kidnapped by Team Rocket, but escaped at the end.
Armaldo also made a cameo in Elijah's new movie "Plusle and Minun and the Princess Rescue" in the episode "Lights, Camerupt, Action!"
Also, in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon special, Dr. Yung created a mirage Armaldo.
[edit] In the Pokémon trading card game
There are two Armaldo cards in print, both as Stage-2 Pokémon:
- EX Sandstorm (Ground-type)
- EX Legend Maker (EX Ground-type)
- EX Holon Phantoms (Ground/Steel dual-type)
It is Stage-2 because it evolves out of Anorith, which in the TCG evolves out of the Claw Fossil trainer card. The EX Sandstorm version can wield an attack that does 50 for 3 energy, and its Poke-Power prevents opponents from playing Supporter-type trainer cards. The Armaldo EX in Legend Maker has the ability to become Grass and Rock if a React Energy is supplied. There is also an Armaldo EX as a promotional card, however, it is now out of date.
