Army of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Democratic Republic of Congo is putting together a new national army following the Second Congo War. It is attempting to integrate former rebels and militias. It was believed to be a powerful institution, however under the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko this constantly changed due to the state of the nation's finances. After the Cold War and the withdrawal of U.S aid and support in November 1990, it began to further degrade due to a lack of financing. In the past, it has been accused of a variety of human rights abuses. Recently U.N officials have also said that the new army is gradually gaining the support and confidence of the people.
Information on the current state of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's military is not widely available. This may be due to the current reformation of the military.
