"Around the World" is a single released off the Red Hot Chili Peppers 1999 album Californication. It was released on September the 14th 1999 as the 2nd single off the album.
It is the first song on Californication, and one of the tracks on the album where the Red Hot Chili Peppers stick closely to their roots in rap and funk, although the song's chorus and outro reflects upon their newfound melodic balladry influences. Therefore, the track could be seen as summing up the album as a whole. The song is notable for Flea's highly distorted bass riff. A drum machine was apparently layered over Chad Smith's drumming during the chorus.
A music video was made for the song, directed by Stéphane Sednaoui, who had previously made famous videos for other Chili Peppers songs such as "Breaking the Girl", "Scar Tissue" and "Give It Away". The latter in particular, with its unique, chaotic visual style, is similar in ways to the "Around the World" video. This video also shares stylistic similarities with the video for R.E.M.'s song "Lotus", also directed by Sednaoui.
Californication attracted criticism for having excessive amounts of high-frequency digital clipping throughout the album. This is clearly evident on the intro of "Around the World", which is very loud, almost abrasive.
As part of the "Year of a Million Dreams" Celebration, the California Screamin’ roller coaster at Disney's California Adventure theme park in Anaheim is using this song as its soundtrack for 16 weeks, from January 3, 2007 to April 26, 2007.
The intro is very similar to that of the song Breadfan by Metallica
