The 4 arrondissements of the Ain department are:
- Arrondissement of Belley, (subprefecture: Belley) with 9 cantons and 107 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 75,020 in 1990, and was 79,656 in 1999, an increase of 6.18%.
- Arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse, (prefecture of the Ain department: Bourg-en-Bresse) with 24 cantons and 219 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 267,656 in 1990, and was 295,351 in 1999, an increase of 10.35%.
- Arrondissement of Gex, (subprefecture: Gex) with 3 cantons and 29 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 52,200 in 1990, and was 59,336 in 1999, an increase of 13.67%.
- Arrondissement of Nantua, (subprefecture: Nantua) with 7 cantons and 64 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 76,143 in 1990, and was 80,927 in 1999, an increase of 6.28%.
