Barnaby Furnas

Barnaby Furnas, (born Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1973), is an American painter that currently lives and works in New York City. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and received a BFA in 1995 before going on to study at Columbia University, New York receiving an MFA in 2000.
Furnas’s work has been exhibited widely internationally at galleries and museums such as the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art [1] in Gateshead UK, Kunsthalle Wien [2] in Austria, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago [3], Galleria d’Arte Moderna [4] in Bologna, The Whitney Museum of American Art [5] in New York, and The Royal Academy [6] in London. He is represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery [7] in New York, and Modern Art Inc. [8] in London.

Barnaby Furnas approaches painting with fundamentalist idealism. Making his own paint from pigment mixed with urethane, his canvases construct modern versions of grand historical themes: glorified battles and religious redemption are updated and laundered as media currency. Furnas slips effortlessly between representation and abstraction. Gushing blood, fiery explosions and clouds of smoke become complex embodiments of painterly gesture, drawing comparison to the poetic abstraction of Cy Twombly and Pollock’s expressive splatters.
