[edit] Complete accounts of Diaz and this trip
I think a lot more should be explained about this trip than what is included in the Catholic Encyclopedia. For instance, the pilots on Diaz's ship were African because no European knew how to navigate Africa and yet the locals had been doing it for centuries. The article almost implies no one had ever been around the southern tip of Africa which totally ignores the populations that live there and were seafarers. The ancient Egyptians (~500BC) wrote about trips around the tip and those stories are thought to have spurred Henry the Navigator into sending trips there. Furthermore, because Portugal now had a sea route to the east that didn't pass through Ottoman lands (at the time the Muslim Ottomans allowed free passage of people of all religions through the Red Sea while in Europe Jews and Muslims were being Inquisitioned by the Catholic Church) they set up a blockade in the Mediteranean sea to divert commerce around the tip of Africa where Portugal could tax them. I'll edit the article a little more later since I have several dozen sources on these things. If anyone else wants to follow this up check out the bibliography of "Lies My Teacher Told Me" and read some of that. It's really a shame that an article sourced from that book made the front page of Wikipedia. The information is acceptable, but it leaves out a lot of context and most of the important details. matthew.townsend 1:13AM 2005/2/4
- This is Wikipedia, remember? Why don't you just add that information to the article yourself? Chacho 22:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "the first European known to do so since ancient times"
The above line in the first paragraph needs at least some form of explanation, and preferably a link. I had always thought that Dias was the first person to sail from Europe all the way around the Cape, adn I doubt that I'm alone. --Dantheox 21:35, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
