Boothstown is a suburb of Greater Manchester, in the metropolitan borough of the City of Salford, in England. Part of the town encroaches on the Wigan boundary.
Once known for its mining community, Boothstown is now a mainly residential area located on the border between the boroughs of Salford and Wigan.
To the North of Boothstown is the East Lancashire Road, which links Manchester to Liverpool, Boothstown lies approximately 12 Miles West of Manchester City Centre and 26 Miles to the East of Liverpool.
In the local area: to the West is Astley, to the North is Walkden, to the East is Worsley with an important transport interchange between the M60, M62 & M602 motorways.
Despite its relative closeness to Manchester, and seeming attractiveness as a commuter town, there is a very apparent feeling amongst local residents that successive Governments and Local Councils have failed to develop and implement any kind of Integrated Transport Policy, causing Boothstown to become a major bottleneck during peak travel times. The possible reasons are two-fold, firstly many people who live in Boothstown drive to work, secondly many other people choose to drive through Boothstown, further adding traffic volume to a near-capacity road network. It is a fact that commuting the 12 miles into Manchester City Centre takes up to 90 minutes on most days. This congestion appears to be relieved slightly during the summer School Holiday period.
There is currently a proposal being made about the possibility of having a race course built at the south of Boothstown running through to Worsley.
Boothstown is also home to ex-Holby City star Ian Aspinall (character Mubbs Hussain). Ian can often be seen wandering the streets of Boothstown and nearby party centrals such as Manchester and Bolton in search of all-night parties. He is also reportedly close friends with Mick Jagger (of Rolling Stones fame) and Pete Noall lead singer of METAL band Thor. Amongst previous residents is former Manchester United footballer Eric Cantona.
