Boy Howdy was founded in 1990, in Los Angeles, California. Before they materialized, most of the members either were solo artists or played with other singers and bands. A year into their union, the band released an independent single with their rendition of the old Civil War song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", at the height of the Gulf War. The band received such a huge response over the song that it caught the attention of Curb Records, a Nashville, Tennessee record label. Curb eventually signed them to their roster. In 1992, Curb released Boy Howdy's debut album titled, Welcome to Howdywood. In 1994, Boy Howdy saw its biggest success with the release of their second album, She'd Give Anything. Even though it was only an extended play record, it produced two Top 5 singles in the title track and "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore." The group's drummer was in a motorcycle accident in late 1994. 1995 saw the release of Boy Howdy's third (and second full-length) album, Born That Way. Unfortunately, the album didn't match the success of its previous effort and Boy Howdy disbanded the following year.
After the band broke up, frontman Jeffrey Steele moved to Nashville. Steele made his second attempt at a solo career, to relatively little success. However, he has had considerable success as a songwriter for other artists.
