Boyan (name)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Boyan is a Yiddish name of the Bukovinan city Boyany/Boian, also the Court Boyan (Hasidic dynasty):
Boyan/Bojan (Bulgarian language: Боян, Macedonian language/Serbian language: Боjан) is a slavonic male given name. It has female analog given name Boyana(Cyrilic:Бојана/Бояна).
It is common name among Slavs and it`s first mentioned in "Tale of Igors Quest" as name of a poet Boyan. It comes from word Boy(Cyrilic:Бој/Бой) which means battle and suffix -an(Cyrilic:-ан), which is common in slavonic names (i.e.Milan(Cyrilic:Милан), Goran(Cyrilic:Горан), Dragan(Cyrilic:Драган), etc). So Boyan is the fighting one.
[edit] Other explanations
Some people think that name originates from two languages: the protobulgarian language, whose meaning is military commander as a noun, and grisly and militant as an adjective, and the Slavic word Boy(Cyrilic:Бој/Бой), which means "battle".While others believe that it comes from famous khagan of Avars Bayan(562.-602.) who ruled Slavs in Panonia.
