The main character, a thirty-something surfer named Brice, lives for one thing: the perfect wave, despite the fact that Nice's niche of the ocean is completely waveless. While waiting, he uses his rich father's money to throw outrageous parties and develop outrageous insults, as well as follow the films Point Break as almost a religion. When his father is arrested for money laundering, however, things change: Brice's life comes crashing down around him, and he soon finds himself jailed for attempted bank robbery, among other things.

While in the prison hospital, he meets a man whose scooter he stole. The two quickly become friends and successfully escape from prison. Stealing Brice's father's lawyer's truck, the two go to the unofficial world surfing championship, conveniently held nearby. With $100,000 in prize money, winning the tournament seems the only chance for the two to help themselves: Brice needs the money to continue his lavish lifestyle, while his friend needs it for an operation.

Brice "talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk", and is quickly eliminated from the tournament, and is recaptured by the police. Though all seems hopeless, the two eventually find success of a sort: Brice surfs his perfect wave, while his friend departs to Brazil with the woman he loves.
