Bryant University is a 4-year private university located in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Until August of 2004, it was known as Bryant College.

Bryant University was founded in 1863 as a branch of Bryant and Stratton. In 1916, the college was sold and merged with Rhode Island Commercial School. Bryant became non-profit in 1949, offered its first master's program in 1969, and became Bryant University in 2004.

Bryant is listed in The Princeton Review's Top 361 Colleges in America and was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the 19th best Master's Universities in the Northeastern region. Bryant was also included in The Princeton Review's list of the "Top 25 Most Connected" campuses (2005) and was recently ranked #5 in Seventeen magazine's list of "Safest Campuses in the United States." Additionally, Bryant is listed as a "best buy" in Barron's Best Buys in College Education. Bryant's average student:faculty ratio of 16:1 provides students with small class sizes and promotes close interaction with faculty and classmates.

For the 2006-2007 academic year, Bryant's tuition is $26,099, and room & board is $10,090. The average financial aid package exceeds $19,000. 87 percent of students reside on campus, with living options ranging from traditional doubles to suites to townhouse apartments. The University has five fraternities and three sororities, and approximately nineteen percent of students belong to these organizations, and a total of 76 percent of students are involved in Student Extracurricular Activities.

[edit] Historical Highlights
1863 Originally called Bryant and Stratton National Business College, Bryant was founded as part of a national chain of private coeducational commercial colleges.
1916 Harry Loeb Jacobs buys the college and merges it with the Rhode Island Commercial School, granting bachelor of commercial science and bachelor of accounting degrees.
1925 Beta Sigma Chi, the college's first Greek Organization, is founded by Greg DeLorenzo and Tony Merlino.
1949 Bryant becomes a nonprofit, governed by a board of trustees.
1963 Bryant holds its first Women’s Symposium.
1964 Bryant earns accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Bryant becomes a four-year school and offers a blend of business and liberal arts courses.
1969 The new Masters of Business Administration degree program is introduced.
1970 Bryant breaks ground on the 220-acre estate in Smithfield, Rhode Island donated by Earl Tupper, president of Tupperware Corporation.
1971 Bryant moves from Providence, RI to the $17.5 million campus in Smithfield, RI. Bryant now occupies 420 acres and 87 percent of Bryant undergraduates live on campus.
1973 Bryant opens the Executive Development Center, which offers adult students classes and certificate programs that provide a practical education to excel in business.
1988 The Rhode Island Export Assistance Center opens on the Bryant campus to serve regional businesses that conduct or would like to begin to do business abroad.
1994 Bryant's business programs receive accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International.
1996 President Ronald K. Machtley takes office. The former U.S. Congressman and U.S. Naval Academy graduate leads Bryant to a new level of prominence.
2001 Bryant launches The Campaign for Bryant, the institution's first comprehensive capital campaign.
2001 The Elizabeth and Malcom Chace Wellness and Athletic Center opens. The facility rivals state-of-the-art, private fitness centers.
2002 The George E. Bello Center for Information and Technology is the highlight of the physical transformation of Bryant's campus. Designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects, the Bello Center houses the Walter and Heidi Stepan Grand Hall, the Douglas and Judith Krupp Library, and the C.V. Starr Financial Markets Center.
2003 Bryant is reclassified as a Master's I-level institution by U.S. News & World Report and ranked in the Top 20 in its category in the Northeast region.
2004 Bryant College becomes Bryant University, with two colleges: the College of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences.
2004 The Campaign for Bryant successfully ends, raising more than $35 million for new facilities, programs, and scholarships.
2005 The U.S.-China Institute opens on campus to enhance academic and business programs with Chinese academic institutions and foster trade between U.S. companies and China.
2005 The Communications Complex in the Koffler Building provides students with a state-of-the-art digital multimedia studio.
2006 Bryant offers new undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Applied Economics. The Graduate School launches the new Bryant MBA program.

Sports and recreation at Bryant University play an integral role in the health and well-being of students, who have the opportunity to participate in any of Bryant's 22 highly successful intercollegiate varsity sports teams. In addition, students can compete in various club sports and on intramural teams throughout the academic year. The university's world-class fitness facilities and dedicated wellness specialists are available to all students, faculty, and staff.
The school's basketball team, the Bulldogs, reached the NCAA Division II Championship Game in 2005, and have made the NCAA tournament the past five years.. The baseball team reached the College World Series in 2004.
The Football team for the first time in school history reached the NCAA Tournament, Losing in the Regionals 31-29 to West Chester University.
Bryant Athletics has also won the President's Cup two out of the past three years, Athletics have been very successfull over the past five years.
A common phrase at Bryant Athletics is "Pack the Pound"
