Burley-Sekem
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Burley is a popular brand of football used in Australian rules football and made by the Burley-Sekem company. The company has been manufacturing footballs in Australia since 1906 when the Burley brothers began making Burley brand balls in East Perth. The founder of Burley Footballs was Joseph Leonard Burley.
Both Sherrin and Burley footballs must fit strict dimensions (including weight) set by the Australian Football League. There are four types of Burley footballs - Team, Match, Attack and Premier. The bladders are identical. Both balls are made using leather from the same Victorian tannery.
Leagues that endorse Burley as the official ball include:
- Australia
- SANFL
- WAFL
- AFL NSW/ACT
- Victorian Women's Football League and the Youth Girls Competition (Victoria)
- International
- USAFL (United States)
- BARFL (UK)
- AFL Canada
- ARFLI (Ireland)
The Burley ball was first used in a league match between East Fremantle Football Club and West Perth Football Club.
