Earl of Portland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The title Earl of Portland has been created twice in the Peerage of England.
It was first created for Richard Weston, 1st Baron Weston, in 1633. He had been created Baron Weston, of Neyland in the County of Suffolk, in 1628. Both titles became extinct on the death of the 4th Earl in 1688.
It was then created for William Bentinck, the favourite of King William III, in 1689, along with the subsidiary titles Viscount Woodstock and Baron Cirencester. In 1715 the 2nd Earl was created Duke of Portland and Marquess of Titchfield in the Peerage of Great Britain. In 1880, Augusta Cavendish-Bentinck, the step-mother of the 6th Duke, was created Baroness Bolsover, of Bolsover Castle in the County of Derby. This title was inherited by the 6th Duke on her death, but became extinct on the death of the 7th Duke in 1977. On the death of the 9th Duke in 1990, the Dukedom of Portland and Marquessate of Titchfield also became extinct, and the Earldom of Portland, Viscountcy of Woodstock and Barony of Cirencester were inherited by a distant cousin, Henry Bentinck, who succeeded as 11th Earl. On his death in 1997, he was succeeded by his son, the actor Tim Bentinck
The Earls are also Count Bentinck in the Peerage of the Holy Roman Empire. The current Earl's aunt who married Dutch nobility uses the title Countess Brydgytte Bentinck instead of her English title of The Lady Brydgytte Bentinck.
