East Bay Asian Youth Center

The East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC) is a private non-profit community-building organization (found in 1976)is based in the San Antonio neighborhood district of the city of Oakland.
EBAYC has a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-lingual membership of over 700 Oakland families who are involved in one of five after-school learning centers, located at Franklin Elementary School, Garfield Elementary School, Manzanita Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School, and the East Bay Asian Youth Center. EBAYC also has a membership of over 100 families who participate in R.I.S.E., our after-school learning center at Berkeley High School.
EBAYC after-school learning centers provide its youth members an integrated array of learning activities, including academic instruction, college & career awareness, health education, sports, outdoor adventures, performing, visual, and media arts, and community service projects. We also provide our high school student members comprehensive internships as reading coaches, sports coaches, social action researchers, and documentary video producers. EBAYC after-school learning centers support parents to be effective advocates and providers for their children. Through EBAYC Parent Action Committees, parents work together to:
Build positive working relationships with teachers and principals that are focused on strengthening student and school-wide academic achievement;
Develop a powerful voice for themselves in decisions that directly affect their after-school learning center, their school, and their neighborhood; and to
Connect themselves to needed family support services and resources.
EBAYC families have demonstrated remarkable leadership across race, culture, and language to improve and strengthen their neighborhoods. Their collective organizing power has achieved important victories, including:
Authoring and leading the successful 1996 Kids First! Initiative campaign, which requires the City of Oakland to dedicate nearly $10 million a year for children and youth services throughout Oakland
Creation of the Roosevelt Village Center and new after-school learning centers at Garfield and Franklin elementary schools
Pedestrian safety improvements around Garfield Elementary School and deployment of a bilingual foot patrol officer along the 23rd Avenue & International Blvd. corridor.
The goals of EBAYC is to:
1. to build a racially and ethnically diverse membership of families in low-income neighborhoods that have a significant population of Asian families;
2. to create neighborhood-based networks of after-school learning centers that provide long-term and culturally-appropriate support to our members, including:
3. providing youth challenging learning experiences that help them succeed in school; be physically and emotionally healthy; and be involved in service to improve their community;
4. engaging parents in powerful relationships that help them be effective advocates and providers for their children;
5. organizing families to build democratic community power to improve and strengthen their schools and neighborhoods.
6. to encourage and support our youth and parent members to participate in decision-making regarding all aspects of the organization.
