Osman Abdel-Mottaleb El-Rayis (Arabic:عثمان الريس) (born August 20. 1946) is an Egyptian chemist. Born and raised in El-Mataria Dakahlia (200 km North-east of Cairo) in Disuq, he received his first degree from the University of Alexandria, then he got a diploma from the institute of Marine Biology, Limnology and Chemistry while he was involved in reserch there, followed by a M.Sc degree from University of Alexandria. Then he moved from Egypt to the United Kingdom to complete his PhD at the University of Liverpool. Now he is a Professor of chemical oceanography.
El-Rayis is one of the pioneers in the Oceanography field around the world. He is concerned with pollution analysis and elimination, his research covers a large areas as Aquatic chemistry (trace elements including trace metals and nutrients) and different pollution aspects. As well as covering different regions from Liverpool in UK, Adan Yemen, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and the ongoing concern with the Mediterranean Sea, and the different lakes lies in North Africa specially Egypt, and the River Nile.
El-Rayis is been considered as one of the reference scientists in the Oceanography field not only in Egypt but in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region as well.
