Elmore County is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General John A. Elmore. As of 2000 its population was 65,874. Its county seat is Wetumpka.

Elmore County was established on February 15, 1866.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,702 km² (657 mi²). 1,609 km² (621 mi²) of it is land and 93 km² (36 mi²) of it (5.47%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 65,874 people, 22,737 households, and 17,552 families residing in the county. The population density was 41/km² (106/mi²). There were 25,733 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 77.02% White, 20.64% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 22,737 households out of which 37.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% were married couples living together, 12.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.80% were non-families. 20.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,243, and the median income for a family was $47,155. Males had a median income of $32,643 versus $24,062 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,650. About 7.40% of families and 10.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.20% of those under age 18 and 11.30% of those age 65 or over.
