Enemy Is Another Big!

Enemy Is Another Big! is the twelfth episode in the first season of The Big O. In the original broadcast, it was mistitled "Enemy Is Another Big O!"

Schwarzwald returns to menace Paradigm City again, using a mysterious giant robot. As he was a former reporter for the Paradigm Corporation, Alex Rosewater (ruler of Paradigm City) hires the Negotiator Roger Smith to deliver Schwarzwald's severance pay check and thus formally fire him.

The address Roger arrives at is a decadent aristocratic party in a high rise building, thrown by Scwarzwald to illustrate to Roger how complacent everyone in the city is. Scharzwald burns the check, and then all of the guests' party masks (which Schwarzwald distributed) burst into flames, killing the guests. Schwarzwald escapes and appears in his giant robot.

Schwarzwald's giant robot is revealed to not just be a Megadeus, but another "Big" robot like Roger's Big O: "Big Duo". Roger is shocked that another Big robot exists. Schwarzwald's Big Duo can fly (unlike land-based Big O) by spinning its fingertips like rotary blades. Big O and Big Duo engage in a gruelling battle inside one of Paradigm City's domes, which climaxes when Big Duo unleashes its most devastating attack: twin nuclear missles hidden in its leg cavities that it drops on Big O's position. The mini-nuclear explosion leaves a large impact crater, and Roger and Big O are nowhere to be seen, presumably vaporized. Schwarzwald lands at the edge of the crater and gloats at his victory.

However, right before the missiles impacted, Roger used Big O's Sudden Impact arm pistons to blast the ground and launch Big O into the air, and then used Big O's hip chains to ratchet Big O up to superstructure of the dome and out of the blast radius of the explosion. The tables have been turned and Roger has the upper ground: he drops Big O from the girders of the dome and lands on top of Big Duo, knocking it into the crater.

Big O rides on top of Big Duo as it slides down the rocky slope to the bottom of the impact crater, severely damaging Big Duo in the process, ripping off its right arm/jet engine. Big Duo is left prostrate on the ground, and Big O punches it in the head using its Sudden Impact arm piston attack, blowing Big Duo's head off. Big O then rips off Big Duo's chest plate to reveal a terrified Schwarzwald in the chest cockpit. Scwarzwald jumps out of the cockpit and off of Big Duo, running to safety, and Big O stops pummeling Big Duo.

To Roger and Schwarzwald's surprise, the crippled body of Big Duo (minus a head, a right arm, or chest plate) with no pilot inside, lurches up to its feet, and slowly walks away from Big O. The unpiloted Big Duo attempts to crawl out of the impact crater all on its own, but just as it rises over the edge (frightenning Dastun and his nearby Military Police), it slumps down powerless. Just before deactivating, it reaches its remaining hand out into the air, possibly towards R. Dorothy who is on a nearby building's roof, watching the battle. Schwarzwald remarks to Roger that the Bigs don't really need a pilot, and ponders if pilots choose them...or if they choose their pilots, before Schwarzwald disappears.

• The fight between Big O and Big Duo is vaguely similar to the fight between EVA-01 and EVA-03 (Bardiel) in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. In both, the main character's "hero" robot (Big O/EVA-01) encounters and fights its "evil twin" (Big Duo/EVA-03). The damage suffered by Big Duo is similar to the damage inflicted on EVA-03: in both, after the "evil twin" has been knocked to the ground, the hero punches in and destroy's the enemy robot's head. Both Big Duo and EVA-03 have their arm ripped off during the fight. At the end of the EVA-01 vs. EVA-03 battle, EVA-01 rips off the chest plate of the incapacitated EVA-03 and proceeds to tear it to pieces, while Big O rips off the chest plate of the incapacitated Big Duo at the end of the battle. The episode ends with Schwarzwald pointing out the mysterious nature of the Big Megadeus robots which is not fully comprehended even by their own pilots, a shared motif with the Evangelion robots.
