One of the sermons that St. Ephrem wrote shows his tendency to spiritualize what happens on earth. The rising of the sun tends to remind us of time, of another day, but also to consider eternity, where there is no time, no decay. He sees the sun also as the coming of new light, new spiritual insight
He sees the crucifxion as a sign for us to crucify ourselves spiritually, and the resurreection as the new birth in the spirit, an opportunity to see heaven as our true home, just as Moses caught a glimpsed of the promised land, but could not enter it during his lifetime.
