"Episode 8" is the eighth episode of the first series of television show Skins, focusing on the character of Effy Stonem, Tony's sister.
[edit] Plot
Tony is forced to care about someone other than himself for once when the one person he cares about, his 14 year old sister Effy disappears.
In the beginning of the episode, we see Effy and Tony having a meal with their parents; both grinning at each other whilst their father tells them a story they've heard many times before. Later on, we see Effy sneak out the house and Tony, seeing her go, climbs into her bed wearing her red and black striped socks and hiding under the cover, only socks exposed, so that when their parents come in, they think they see Effy fast asleep and leave her be.
Later in the episode, we see Effy (and her rather talkative friend Julie) meet up with some boys who know Effy. One of the boys is called Spencer, and him and Effy end up kissing and taking pills together. As the episode goes on, Effy ends up being kidnapped (though she doesn't know it) and taken to a sports hall where she takes drugs and passes out, speaking her first ever words in the whole series "sometimes I think I was born backwards... out the wrong way of my mum. The people I should love, I hate, and the people I hate..." and then she passes out. The person who provides Effy with the drugs is none other than Josh Stock, Abigail's brother, so here we find Spencer obviously was in on the whole thing and brought Effy to Josh.
Tony figures out Effy has been kidnapped and enlists in Sid's help, but when they have no luck finding Effy, they argue, and Sid abandons Tony. Tony manages to get to the party at the sports hall ("where the rich kids come to die"), where he finds Effy who has had the overdose. Josh is also there, and after Spencer breaks Tony's phone, Josh tells Tony he knows that it was Tony who sent the naked photos of Abigail to Michelle. Tony runs over to Effy's body and begs Josh to call an ambulance. Josh replies with "I'll call the ambulance, when you fuck your sister" thus matching punishment to Tony's crime. Tony is left crying while Josh pulls his shirt off and says Tony has to do it otherwise he's letting his sister die. Tony sobs "I'll do anything please not this" Josh then leans over Tony and says "beg me" to which Tony sobs and begs Josh to not make him do this. Josh then smiles and taps Tony on the cheek and whispers "all you had to do was ask" before he stands up and looks down at Tony and mutters "here endeth the lesson!"
Sid meets Cassie, and they kiss, but after a worried phone-call from Michelle about where Tony is, Sid goes to save Tony. Sid asks Cassie if she'll give him a kiss goodbye to which she looks at him, angry that he is leaving her for Tony, and replies "No Sid you can't." Sid looks at her sadly, before turning his back on her, leaving her alone in the cafe. Tony and Sid reunite, with Tony crying whilst carrying an unconscious Effy and he says to Sid "it's all my fault! This is all my fault!" The pair get Effy to hospital, where she is taken care of. Tony's parents arrive as well, and the doctor informs them all Effy will be fine, but Tony's parents think that it was Tony who gave Effy drugs, and blame him for her comatose state. Sid then replies to Tony's parents' accusations with "that's enough!" and when his father asks him who he is, Sid replies "I'm his best friend!" to which Tony's father responds "and I'm his fucking father!", and Sid says coolly "I know what you are... come on Tony, we're going!"
The episode ends with Tony sat outside Effy's hospital room while Sid brings him a coffee. Tony says thanks and Sid says it's alright it's free, to which Tony replies "no, I mean... thanks for everything". Sid looks and him and says "I know what you meant". Tony then tells Sid he feels he owns Effy in a way, because she is his sister, and he thought he owned Sid too but he was wrong. To which Sid obviously thinks back to him abandoning Cassie in the cafe for Tony and he replies "Thing is Tony, you sort of own me too, mostly in a good way" Tony then tells Sid that he was really scared this night, and he informs Sid that while it was all happening, he wished Sid had been there and he wanted Sid to help him. The two are left sat outside Effy's room in the hospital, looking straight ahead.
It's possible that Effy is also concerned with existentialism like her brother Tony, her myspace page features Shakespeare's sonnet 60 in morse code. The theme of sonnet 60 being mortality.
