[edit] History
Ferdinand Salling opened the first føtex in 1960 in the street "Guldsmedegade" in the city of Århus in Denmark. føtex revolutionized the way that the Danes were going to do their shoppings in the future. This was the first time the Danes saw a non-food (electronics, clothes, perfumes, books etc.) and a food department gathered under one roof.
In 1964, Herman Salling, ancestor of Ferdinand Salling, realized that to combat with other initiatives starting in those years, he needed a strong financial support. He contacted the A.P. Møller-Mærsk Group which accuired 50% of the shares and supported Sallings project financially.
As of 2006, the chain consists of 76 stores located all over Denmark with føtex in Ringsted as the newest store, opened October 18, 2006. Further expansion is planned.
[edit] Inside a føtex store
The concept on which Føtex consists of is "great quality, great service at low costs" which is also represented in the company slogan "afford more" (Danish: "Få råd til mere").
A føtex store consists of both a Food and Non-food section. Mostly both departments are combined as one store, but due to local building codes you can also find the two departments separated in a Food, and Non-food department. Furthermore you will find a bakery filled with fresh high quality bread and pastries, and with the option to order something special to suit the customers desires. a Kiosk selling alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and common pharmaceutical products, is also available.
Inside you will find a butchery always producing freshly cut meat, and if you need a special steak, then just ask the staff. Furthermore you will find a Delicatessen selling fresh hot and cold dishes to-go, and if you are to have a party or gathering, the Delicatessen can put something together for you.
If you need advice on what television or computer you need, then the staff in the electronics department can answer almost all of your questions, or at least help you find someone who can. The same goes for perfumes and clothes.
In general the staff is trained to help you in every way they can to make your shopping experience something unique.
[edit] E-commerce
To keep up with the rest of the world, føtex entered the world of e-commerce. They launced their website[1] where you can order printed copies of your digital photos online, buy music in the online music store, look through the two weekly advertising papers. You can find recipies if you need inspiration for dinner, and order odd size goods (e.g. wood for your fireplace, huge party tents, smaller playground sets, greenhouses etc.), which will be delivered right to your doorstep within two weeks.
