[edit] The big to-do about VfD
VfD is "broken", and everyone thinks that they're the Gracchi all of a sudden. Quite frankly, the sudden explosion of outrage is a bit out of proportion to the problem. The criteria for speedy deletion were only updated just recently, and people are still getting used to them. If things had been given a chance to settle down, 25-50% of the articles tying up resources (both mental and electronic) at VfD would have gone to speedy as nominators learned their way around the new criteria a little better. As Geogre has wisely pointed out, a point will come when Wikipedia will be too bloated for VfD to function in its current form. He is absolutely correct; however, I don't think we've reached that point yet.
The only reason for the big explosion of interest in deposing the current VfD system is that User:Ed Poor decided that he would do some grand-standing in order to make a point and delete the VfD page. Many of the people throwing around ideas are users that I never see on VfD, and it's possible that there's a bandwagon effect at work here.
VfD pretty much works. If anything needs to be done, it's a refinement of the criteria for deletion. You'll find some good ideas that I concur with in Malathion's short essay on the subject. Geogre is casting his stone for a unique system that I don't agree with (yet; it's a work in progress at the moment) but that is certainly worth reading over.
