Fundamental representation

A representation of a Lie group or of a Lie algebra is called a fundamental representation, if it is irreducible and its highest weight is a fundamental weight.
(The highest weight theory is only standard for reductive Lie groups and Lie algebras, and so the fundamental representations are only defined for them.)
For example, the fundamental representations of the special linear group are the exterior powers of the standard representation.
