GAI
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GAI (pronounced guy-EE) stands for "Gorodskaya Auto Inspektsia" or "Main Office of State Road Safety Inspection" and is the Russian traffic police. They are responsible for the regulation of traffic, investigating traffic accidents, and manning the stop lights.
[edit] Issues
The GAI are fairly notorious for being sticklers for the rules and willing to accept bribes. The reason for this is that they are paid about 150 USD per month, and need to supplement their income. The GAI are also notorious for being able to find the smallest fault on a vehicle or a drivers documentation (even if none previously existed) and issuing the appropriate fine. Typically a GAI officer will offer a 50% reduction on the fine if paid on the spot rather than paying at the police station. The black and white baton they carry is known as a pozhalista (please) stick.
