[edit] Characters
I've had little luck in trying to find out the characters' names. Through numerous different Google searches, all I've been able to find are the following:
- James (starting guy with gun)
- Siren (starting girl)
- Tonga (starting guy with spear)[1]
- Zaemon (wind knight)[2]
If anyone happens to know the names of the rest of the characters, help me out.--RiffRaff1138 16:16, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
I've been searching pretty hard, and that's all I was able to find as well. I didn't want to put them in the article, because it was incomplete. Some pictures would probably be good as well. Pinano 00:31, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
Classic Arcade Grafix sells a Gain Ground arcade bezel, which has pictures of each of the 20 characters, with information listed alongside them. A minute or two ago, I sent them an e-mail asking if they could give me the character names as listed on the bezel. The site says to allow for 24 hours for a response...
If they do give me the names (small chance, but here's hoping), I can take the character mugshots from the game, and add the pictures and information to the article.--RiffRaff1138 19:59, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
Success! I've found some websites listing all of the characters' original Japanese names (in katakana; I romanized them as best as I could). I'm still in the process of screencapping all of their mugshots, but at least the hard part is over with.
- Johnny (starter guy with gun)
- Betty (starter girl with grenades)
- Athra (starter guy with spear)
- Barber (Viking-looking bowman)
- Gaston (spearman who bears resemblance to Arnold Schwarzenegger)
- Moss (bowman who doesn't look like a viking)
- Robbie (guy with rocket launcher and domed helmet)
- Cyber (rocket guy who appears to have an underwater breathing apparatus)
- Glow Knight (knight with four rotating orbs as special attack)
- Fire Knight (rather self-explanatory)
- Water Knight (again...)
- Zaemon (tornado-summoning samurai)
- Mamu (short-haired bomerang user)
- Valkyrie (long-haired, headband-wearing boomerang user)
- Kou (mustachioed, SMG-wielding guy)
- General (M. Bison-looking guy with flamethrower)
- Professor (gunman with mustache, flight cap, and shades)
- Kiddo (gunman with motorcycle helmet)
- Mad Poppy (guy with shades and huge shoulder-mounted flame launcher)
- Honey (blonde with sunglasses and grenades)
I'm not entirely certain "Barber", "Gaston", "Moss", and "Mad Poppy" are accurate romanizations (Directly romanized, they were "Baabaru", "Gasucano", "Massu", and "Maddopapii"). Also, "Professor"'s name was written in kanji, not katakana, and "Professor" was what Babelfish translated it as. And we all know how reliable Babelfish is... Still, it's a lot better than nothing.
If someone were to get access to the PS2 Sega Ages version, they could confirm these. I've seen Johnny, Betty, Athra, and Glow Knight's names in videos of the PS2 game in action, so I know for a fact that they are correct. And I found Honey and Valkyrie's names written in English on Japanese Gain Ground fanart, so I have to assume they're right too. --RiffRaff1138 20:40, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Riff Raff... marry me. I've been trying to find that character list for eons, having been introduced to it a long time ago by my uncle (who to this day remains an avid fan of the game). Recently, thanks to MAME, I rediscovered the game and made a hobby out of trying to find a character list. My efforts were fruitless until now. Bless you. I've also found an excellent resource for the game: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/gainground/gainground.htm Cheers.
