[edit] version to portuguese

hey, is there any problem if I turn your father's english version into portuguese since there is no entry in portuguese? Eltonusp 20:04, 8 August 2006 (UTC)eltonusp

That would be great. Not that I have any rights over it; most of it is not by me and everything becomes shared once entered. But thanks for asking. --GwydionM 20:10, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting your Pleonasm edits

The pleonasm article is not a list of tautological place names; there's already an article for that. Also the edit you made to "the La Brea tar pits" example was redundant with the text that immediately follows the example. Please read more carefully before you edit.  :-) I did add more information about tautological placenames - the point was good; we just don't need to duplicate the list wikilinked above, but just wikilink to it instead. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] - 00:12, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rand and libertarians

Regarding your comments on Talk:Ayn Rand, please remember that Wikipedia is not a soapbox or debating forum. Thanks. --zenohockey 16:10, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mao

Hey I read your comment on Mao. I'm surprised the amount of insight you put in for a person in the West. Have you ever visited China? Colipon+(T) 05:15, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Glad I'm being read, and don't sound stupid to someone with direct experience. I have visited just once, for the 1997 eclipse. I read a great deal, and not just about China. --GwydionM 18:23, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Anyone still interested in my views on China might like to take a look at what I said in 1989. [1] --GwydionM 14:34, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The anon block

Because of the way AOL handles IP addresses, users may get a different IP every time they log in or change pages. The messages for the IP were not directed at you, but at someone who had been at that particular ip for a bit and did some vandalizing. If you log in and find yourself blocked, you can either try logging in and out of AOL to change your ip or you can make a note of the IP in the block message and place an {{unblock}} here with the ip address and say that its an AOL IP. Most likely an admin will wander by and unblock you. Also, if the ip happens to be blocked you can still read wikipedia articles and change items on your own Userpages...just you can't change items on other pages on Wikipedia. Just wanted to drop you a note since I didn't see a reply here yet from an admin regarding your comments on the ip page from earlier. If you have any questions, you can leave a message on my User talk:Syrthiss page or here. :) --Syrthiss 22:21, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

also, since you haven't been officially welcomed yet...

Hello, GwydionM. I'm SuggestBot, a Wikipedia bot that helps new members contribute to Wikipedia. Based on your previous edits, I have made a list of articles you might like to work on. I hope you find this useful. -- SuggestBot 01:52, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Star-Names and Their Meanings

There is no need to make an internal link for the original title "Star-Names and Their Meanings" since it has become a redirect page anyway. Regards, BorgQueen 20:44, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How to be a good Wikipedian

I keep getting {{wikify}} This gets put on pages I've added, without me being sure why. In some cases, yes, I am given a definite reason and try to adjust. I've also picked up some of the rules. I'm now using sections and redirects, and also short headers, as recomended. But to be told you've breached some rule out of numerous pages of rules on a style-guide is confusing.

It would help a lot if the comment were more specific - as simple as a code that would point to the rule being breached. Some contributors with useful things to say may have been put off.

Also is there a procedure for removing the tag when the original fault has been corrected?

I'm hugely impressed by what the original community has created. But it can be a bit confusing to newcomers. Anyone can change anything - personally, I think everyone should register first. I'd not object to a test of 'wiki-competance' before anyone is allowed to edit or add pages. But it could be a bit clearer what the norms are.

--GwydionM 17:44, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Wikify means to add in-Wikipedia links so that people can get more information on related subjects. You make them by putting square brackets around the word you want to link like this: [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style]], which will appear on the page as Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Its a good idea to hit preview and open those links into a new window or tab just to make sure there is an article there (if no article exists, the link will appear red...but you might just have the spelling or capitalization wrong). As to removing the wikify tag, the safest bet is to see who placed it there in the edit history and ask them on their talk page to come back and see if the article has been wikified enough for them to remove the tag. If you can't find them, you can ask another experienced editor to check.
I agree that a lot of the standard messages aren't very helpful to newcomers. They are designed, in my opinion, to convey a message in a minimally intrusive way...but if you aren't an experience editor, they are more likely to confuse you than help. If you are ever in doubt as to what something means, you can always ask at the help desk, or on the talk page for the article that is tagged with the message, or leave me a message on my talk page. --Syrthiss 13:31, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:AOL

Well, I haven't blocked anyone since yesterday, and if you can edit my talk page, you're not blocked :). That happens sometimes, you get hit by an autoblock that expires when you change IPs again. So no worries :).--Sean Black (talk) 20:49, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Reform Bills

I redirected the article The Reform Bills to the page Reform Act which links to the specific acts you listed in The Reform Bills. Feel free to edit the other reform act articles! Earlopogous 01:41, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Earlopogous, please look before you redirect. I've now restored the article, which has a lot of background that is missing from the other page. --GwydionM 18:11, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Starship Troopers (Nomination)

Nice merger for the two Roughneck pages, but you should include a spoiler warning. I added it.

Plus a warning about the sequence error. Having already seen the alien as an ally, the whole suprise ending was spolied for me.

--GwydionM 16:26, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry dude. I haven't seen the series and wasn't really trying to make the article user-friendly (in other words, I was just merging, not writing). I really hate it when people spoil surprise endings, so you have my apologies on that. Palm_Dogg 17:04, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] British and Irish Communist Organisation

Hi - thanks for your patient work on this article. As a former member, do you know when the group was actually disbanded? Warofdreams talk 15:35, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your reply - I'll mention that in the article. You're absolutely right, I have been trying to introduce information into the article, but it's difficult to find anything unbiased on the group other than its own writings, so it's been difficult to determine exactly what is true and what is unfounded. [edit] mediation cabal

You created a case Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-05-28 Friedrich List for the mediation cabal. You don't appear to have followed the instructions nor created the needed information. Did you intend to start a case? jbolden1517Talk 22:01, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, definitely. Sorry for getting the proceedures wrong. I've now re-checked, found the form and used it. Hope that's OK now.

My original wrong posting I have left at the top. If you want to remove it, fine. --GwydionM 13:55, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tolkien categories

Hi there. I see you joined WikiProject Middle-earth recently. Welcome!

I have a quick bit of advice about Tolkien categories. I noticed that you added some "Tolkien" and "J. R. R. Tolkien" categories to some articles, including All that is Gold Does Not Glitter. Where possible, categorisation is done to the most specific level possible, so all the articles in Category:Middle-earth poetry will indirectly be found under Category:Tolkien. So most articles should in fact be added to some specific level, rather than the 'top' Tolkien level. Thanks. Carcharoth 14:21, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Novel categories

Greetings! I see that you have created Cat:Rural Novels and Cat:Urban Novels. Unfortunately, Cat:Urban fiction already exists and seems to disagree with the type of book found in your category. Will you please provide either a brief explanation of what should go in the novel cats, or a link to an article describing the genres? This is to help in categorization for some of us not conversant with the genre. Thanks! Her Pegship 00:10, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

About the case, you are quite right. But a lot more books need to be placed in these categories. No one seems to have bothered.
A category should include books about the topic as well as within the topic. Maybe subcategroised. --GwydionM 16:47, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
The categories have only existed a few weeks; give it time. You might also check in at Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels and stir up some interest. Her Pegship 17:49, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Times obituary of Adam Smith

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Times obituary of Adam Smith, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Times obituary of Adam Smith. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. --Benn Newman 04:52, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I've done a shortened version, highlighting what I see as the most interesting points. Is that OK? --GwydionM 16:42, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What's the 'other prequel' to Lord Of The Rings?

In reply to you comment in Talk:Peter Jackson. I think it should be the Gandalf version of "the Hobbit". This story is a link to Bilbo story and the facts just before (and at the beginning) of LOTR, and maybe something about the northern wars (parallel to LOTR). The story IIRC is in the annotated Hobbit (or in the appendices of LOTR). Cate 16:32, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
