[edit] Official Candidates

[edit] Joe Greene

Greene announced his candidacy on January 19 in the Regina Suite of the Hotel Saskatchewan. As a campaign tool, Greene's team released chapters of a book titled "The Liberalism of Joe Greene". He emphasized productivity as his main campaign theme.

Supporters in caucus:
Date campaign launched: January 19, 1968.

[edit] Paul Hellyer

Hellyer, then 44, was the Member of Parliament for Trinity, first elected in 1949 in Davenport, the youngest person ever elected as MP to that point. He served as Associate Minister of National Defence in Saint-Laurent's cabinet. Defeated in 1957, he returned to parliament in a 1958 by-election in the riding of Trinity. When the Liberals returned to power in 1963, he was made Minister of National Defence by Pearson. After withdrawing, he endorsed Winters.

In 1969, he left the Liberal caucus and first tried to form a new political party (Action Canada), and then joined the Progressive Conservatives. Re-elected in 1972, he was defeated in 1974. As a candidate at the PC leadership convention of 1976, he alienated many with his right-wing views. He finished sixth of eight. He lost the Liberal nomination in the riding of St. Paul's in 1988. In 1997, he formed the economically nationalist Canadian Action Party. He resigned as leader in 2004, but remains a member. In September 2005, he made headlines by publicly announcing that he believed in UFOs.

Supporters in caucus: Robert Andras, James Byrne, Léo Cadieux, Grant Deachman, Stanley Haidasz, Judy LaMarsh and Sen. Keith Davey.
Date campaign launched: January 11, 1968.

[edit] Lloyd Henderson

Henderson, ex-mayor of Portage-La Prarie in Manitoba, was the first declared candidate in the race. He had previously run in 1958, winning the support of just one delegate. He became known an "One-Vote Henderson". He was considered a "fringe candidate". Ultimately, he outdid his performance in 1958, receiving zero votes. He endorsed Turner, though, receiving no votes, this likely had no effect.

Supporters in caucus: None.
Date campaign launched: Before December 18, 1967.

[edit] Eric Kierans

Kierans supported free trade with the United States. He did not endorse any candidate upon his withdrawl at the convention.

[edit] Ernst Zündel

Zündel (sometimes Zuendel), then 29 and a Montreal-based commercial artist, openly admitted in a speech that he was "one of the nuisance candidates". Politely, if unenthusiastically, received by the delegates, the bilingual, "good-looking and well-spoken" Zündel finished charged that television was propagating an anti-immigrant ethos among Canadians by showing "anti-German hate programs" on television. He later became noted Holocaust denier, and has been deported from Canada.
