Hawthorn East, is an affluent, upper middle-class suburb of Melbourne, Australia, in the state of Victoria. It is approximately 9 km east of the Melbourne CBD. It was originally established in the 1880s and much of the historical buildings and houses are still well preserved. It is rated as one of the top five suburbs in Melbourne after Toorak, Canterbury, Brighton and Armadale.
It is located in the Local Government Area of the City of Boroondara. It is between two popular shopping strips on Glenferrie Road and Burke Road. Current real estate analysis reveals that the median price range of homes is in excess of $1 million dollars. Large houses on land blocks of more than 900 sqm routinely fetch more than $1.8 million. This suburb has one of the fastest growth potentials and land value increases in the metropolitan area including Toorak, Kew, Malvern etc.
Hawthorn East's popularity and high housing values are due to the following reasons:
- Close proximity to the city and the City Link tollway
- Access to public transport (choice of three railway stations and several tram routes)
- Close proximity to about 10 exclusive private schools in the neighbouring areas
- Well preserved Victorian architecture and beautiful tree lined streets
- Excellent shopping, dining and entertainment choices within walking distance
- Well run local government
- Excellent public safety record and low crime rates
