His fifth album 4630 Bochum (1984) was the best-selling German language record of all time.

[edit] Biography
[edit] Birth and Childhood
Grönemeyer has his own explanation for why he was born in Göttingen and not Bochum: "I was only born in Göttingen because my mother often fainted when she was pregnant with me. She did this every time she turned to her left side, and no one believed her. In Göttingen there was a professor, a specialist, and he didn't believe her either, at which point she lay down, fainted, and brought me into the world. This is why I was born in Göttingen."
[edit] Work
2002 saw his first number one single: the title track from the "Mensch" (german word for human) album, which was strongly influenced by the deaths of his wife Anna and brother Wilhelm in 1998 (both dying within one week).
His other brother Dietrich is a distinguished professor of medicine. Apart from Das Boot Grönemeyer has only acted in a few other movies, such as Spring Symphony about composer Robert Schumann.
Grönemeyer's forays into the English language have met with very little success, as the wordplay in his lyrics has proved impossible to reflect in translation. He remains largely unknown outside German-speaking countries.
Time Magazine awarded him the title of "European Hero" in 2005 for his humanitarian work.
