From the Portuguese verb "Retornar" to return, meaning the ones that have returned. After the military coup of 25th of April of 1974 the days of the Portuguese African Empire were numbered . Soon the Independences of the former African colonies issued. The political turmoil in Portugal , and the politicization of the colonial army created a political void, the struggle for power started even before the independences took place. This created a severe unrest in the White (but not only) populations that lived in Angola , Mozambique and to a lesser extent in Guinea , they were referred as "Colonos" , Colonials. The majority of them fled to Portugal accompanied by great numbers of blacks and coloured ("mulatos"). It was one of the great mass migrations of the late 20th century (one taken mostly by plane. The total numbers of this migrants are not clear they range from 500000 to 1 million. They where not welcomed . The term "Retornado" was uttered as an insult . Surprisingly when taken in consideration that Portugal is a country with a population of only 10 million , this enormous population flow was integrated quite quickly .
