Home run in final at-bat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A home run is a play in the sport of baseball. It is considered extraordinary, because it requires significant skill and power on the part of the batter. It also provides instant scoring for the batting team.
Home runs are a relatively rare occurrence during a ballplayer's career, even for those players who have hit many of them (such as Babe Ruth, Henry Aaron and Barry Bonds).
Of the many thousands of major league baseball players over 130 years, a small number have accomplished this feat on their final appearance at bat in their careers. Some of these players are well-known (most notably Mickey Cochrane and Ted Williams, who are members of the Baseball Hall of Fame) while many are otherwise little known and who just happened to hit the ball well in their final turns at the plate.
[edit] Trivia
- Paul Gillespie is the only player in MLB history to hit home runs in his first and last big league at bats.
