Hood of the Living Dead is a zombie movie about a regenerative formula bringing the dead back to life, released in 2005. It went directly to video and achieved a very minor cult status from there. This was one of many recent direct-to-video attempts to give the zombie genre a hip-hop twist, with similar works like Zombiez.
[edit] Synopsis
Ricky (Carl Washington) is a young scientist living in a poor and violent section of Oakland with his brother Jermaine (Brandon Daniels). Ever since his parents died, Ricky has been working hard at a laboratory trying to perfect a regenerative formula that could heal dead cells in animals. Ricky disapproves of Jermaine's friends Marco (Raul Martinez) and Kevin (Derek Taylor II)and tells his brother that they will be moving to a safer community at the end of the month. While out with his friends one night, Jermaine is threatened by a group of drug dealers that claim that his brother Ricky reported their illegal activities to the police. That night as Jermaine goes out, he is killed in a drive by shooting. Ricky, in a state of panic, gets his co-worker Scott (Chris Angelo) bring over the regenerative formula, and injects Jermaine's body with an overdose. When nothing happens, Ricky enlists Marco and Kevin in order to exact his revenge. Jermaine comes back to life as a undead flesh-eater and pursues his killers. From there, the infection spreads through flesh wounds, turning the dealers, Ricky's girlfriend, and an ambulance crew into the shambling dead. Once Ricky realizes he's in over his head he calls his boss, Dr. Richards (Victor Zargoza) and tells him of the disaster. Dr. Richards, not wanting the virus to spread out of control, calls in a mercenary to deal with the problem. The group hunts down the remaining zombies, with the mercenary getting turned into a zombie in the process. Ricky returns home with Dr. Richards, who has been infected. Dr. Richards, having been turned undead, attacks Ricky, but undead Jermaine comes to Ricky's rescue killing Richards. Jermaine's reanimated corpse then turns on Ricky, who is forced to shoot his own brother.
As the movie ends, a lone driver (Director Ed Quiroz in a brief cameo) sees the abandoned ambulance and pulls over to help. He is attacked by the undead hospital crew, thus continuing the hip-hop cycle of horror for an unlikely sequel.
