Human directional
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A human directional, sign walker or sign twirler is a person who can provide businesses with maximum exposure. They allure by spinning, or dancing with, a promotional sign. Human directionals are commonly used to advertise new housing developments and retail stores as well.
These are the descendants of one of the earliest methods of advertising, from the Victorian era at least. In the major crowded thoroughfares, men, often very poor ones, would be hired to walk with a sign hanging both in front of them and in back of them. Women were not hired to do this. Sign twirlers differ in that their venues are not as crowded with people–cars are often targeted instead–and the product or service is available only at the site indicated, as opposed to advertising a brand of brown sauce, for example.
