Iulius 07:26, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Gal norėtumėte prabalsuoti Talk:Władysław II Jagiełło? Nors man, kaip lietuvei, ne visai patinka sulenkintas Jagiello variantas, bet tai vis geriau nei pažodinis lenkiškas vardas Władysław II Jagiełło (Jogailos laikais tokių lenkiškų raidžių dar neegzistavo). Jagiello forma labiau paplito anglų kalboj nei Jogaila, bent jau pagal Google rezultatus. Juraune 07:59, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Jonines in Vepriai.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Jonines in Vepriai.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] LVLS

Hi there. I was hoping to move the Peasants and New Democratic Party Union article to a new namespace reflecting its renaming from Valstiečių ir Naujosios demokratijos partijų sąjungos to Lietuvos valstiečių liaudininkų sąjunga. I've found two possible English translations for Lietuvos valstiečių liaudininkų sąjunga online -- "Lithuanian Peasant Nationalist Union" and "Lithuanian Peasant Popular Union." I was wondering if as a native speaker you had any opinion as to which was more correct. Thanks! The Tom 22:15, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Minor edits

Iulius, your edit to Past iterative tense was a very nice addition. However, it was not a minor edit. Please check out Help:Minor edit. When in doubt, don't mark things minor. It really does make a difference, since some people watching the page may be ignoring minor edits. Thanks. Lesnail 23:11, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

sorry, its unintentional, as minor edit is marked as default in my page. Iulius 08:03, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
You can take it off from your preferences (under editing tab). Renata 12:19, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey, maybe you could answer this question: what tense does "buna" belong to? As in when you are travelling and they say "buna festivalis" here, but possibly or probably not today. Novickas 23:25, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

the tense is present of the very same verb būti which has three present tense forms: esti, yra and būna. So būna is the closest to "there is", "is organised" perhaps. Iulius 08:03, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
The plot thickens. In [2] it says "there are four different present tense conjugational patterns of the verb būti...(jis)esti, yra, būna, būva" and then that "the normative, or school grammars of Lithuanian usually present only the second pattern, but all four are still used in various dialects and regions of Lithuanian." Other sources describe it as past tense. Hmm. So it seems to me that this tense is something unique to Lithuanian and perhaps merits its own entry. BTW, "Buna festivalis" is a running joke in our family, describing the situation when the L. relatives come here, or we go there, and sitting in a kavine somewhere waiting for the rain to stop, someone will always say "buna festivalis čia". A sort of dark humor about bad luck. Know any philologists? Sincerely, Novickas 12:46, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
that's a some sort of specific word in our language and linguistics is never mathematics. Būna is usually used as a very general word about being with certain extent of repetitiveness of a state, which is yet not always compulsory. Vasarą būna šilta means not only 'it is (generally) warm in summer' but also 'it is sometimes warm in summer', depending on the context. Yes, the meaning of this form is extremely indefinite, lets name it present indefinite continuous ;) Būna is a very common word in everyday standard Lithuanian and is even used as a sentence "Būna..." means 'you are not the only person in the only circumstances experiencing this state/event' Iulius 13:55, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Hey, ačiu. A Google of "present indefinite continuous tense lithuanian" turned up this site [3], stating that "Translating verb tense and aspect is the most troublesome area in comparative analysis of tense aspect systems of the English and Lithuanian languages." Your last sentence implies some sort of existentialist interpretation of the tense, and has shed new light on the issue for me. Thanks again. Novickas 15:30, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

it is much work left to be done, on the points I said, all the mess should be cleared out first (all the usages of italics and so on) :) Iulius 08:14, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Good work on wikipedia from what I've seen, I have added a poster and a screenshot to your Lithuanian documentary. However I hope this won't interfere with your DYK request I'm not aware of the limitations in terms of fair use imagery in relation to appearing on the main page - if Nishkid or whoever decides not the images can be taken awayfor it to go on the front page and then replaced afterwards. I am from WIkiProject Film, currently creating a chronology of films by country e.g List of Argentine films and missing films although i haven't got around to Lithuania yet. Feel free to start films from http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Countries/Lithuania/ and you can find the movie posters on google. It would mean a lot to fill in Lithuanian films I beleive we only have 3 on wikkipedia so far so please xpand it!! CheersErnst Stavro Blofeld 17:35, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

I was wonderiong about the poster it didn't look right its just I found it on a page with an article discussing the film in lithuanian Ernst Stavro Blofeld 22:08, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Barbara Radziwill

Please don't take it personally, but it is completely irresponsible and unencyclopedic to attempt to medically "diagnose" the cause her death, being uterine cancer, four hundred and fifty-five years after the fact. Without a histological examination, one is only presenting a theory, which is not only unfair to the historical personage, but even more unfair to today's readers, who are given a skewed perspective of an assumption or an opinion. The "reference" you included from Grušas, is hardly scholarly or conclusive of anything. Sometime back, I removed the "theory" from Polish WP, that she may have had a venereal disease. Again, we can't be adding theories to an Encylopedia without the seriousness of the Encyclopedia being questioned, and eventually discredited becuse of such edits. I hope you see my point and will agree to remove this unprovable information. Best wishes Dr. Dan 18:53, 25 February 2007 (UTC) P.S. Please send me an e-mail, I wish to privately speak to you about an important matter.

The researchers in Lithuania have recently carried out a study of her remains, that proved almost certainly that the cause was a cancer. I suppose they know better than You or me, what are verifiable research results? I am sorry not to have the main research source available.. Iulius 19:04, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
I would be very interested to know when her remains were "recently" exhumed, and also to verify what seems to be an almost imposssible claim; if and when some conclusive histological tests, some four and a half centuries after her death, were able to prove this hypothesis of uterine cancer. I have visited her tomb in Vilnius' Cathedral, and I believe you are correct that some kind remodeling in the cathedral was done in the 1970's, that affected her being exhumed. "Almost certainly" and "was a cancer", is WP:weaseling, and since I'm disputing it, please provide the source of the claim. It would be a mistake for me to agree with the idea that they know better than Me or you, what are verifiable research results, without looking them over. Doesn't that make sense to you? Dr. Dan 15:06, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Žirmūnai

Here is a historical reference that might be put in the article: [4] Novickas 01:43, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I asked Juozas for this, but he is not responding, so I ask you. Maybe you know references for this part The area was given the name Žirmūnai during the early 1960s, when it became the site of an award-winning residential construction project, the first microdistrict in the Lithuanian SSR to be constructed applying urban planning concepts established in the USSR at the time.? M.K. 10:37, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
it was taken from Lithuanian wikipedia, the direct source was not provided, but i thought to have one old soviet book of Vilnius, where it is mentioned in some wayIulius 11:19, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Hm, if you can access this book please use it. M.K. 11:22, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Among other things regarding Žirmūnai, could you point to the references regarding crime statistics? As well as these:
During the 16th century, the only glass factory in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was located in the suburb of Žvejai. and
Of the remaining residents, 0.4 percent owned a share of individual housing, 0.7 percent lived in hostels, and almost 99 percent lived in apartments. M.K. 10:54, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately I do not have any references on statistics and glass factory. Ask Juozas Rimas.Iulius 10:56, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
He is not responding :( M.K. 11:01, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
it should be something from Statistikos departamentas...Iulius 11:05, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Palanga Amber Museum

Thanks for helping :) Question: I have a nice piece of amber with an insect in it that I bought in Palanga some years ago. It was from a Palanga art gallery, and came with some sort of certificate stating that it was found nearby - have since lost the certificate. Apart from the technical difficulties (for me) in photographing the piece, do you think such a photo could go in the article? Or would it be clutter? Novickas 17:38, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

go for it Iulius 17:48, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Picture never did come out right....Novickas 11:58, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Could you help me with * use – for dashes and * Use &minus for negative figures. as per comment on FAC? M.K. 09:33, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm afraid I am not adept enough in that but i could try if I knew.Iulius 09:34, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Maybe you know altitude for Žirmunai? M.K. 11:44, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I could go out and carry out some measurements :D I am pretty sure that the lowest part is Neris near Mindaugas bridge and the highest is somewhere where I live, in the northern part
Per this [6] the altitude is 119 metres.Novickas 11:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Zvejai pic - Please fix it if you like, my picture editing software is very limited. Novickas 14:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
try out Adobe Lightroom ;) I will try to fix. Iulius 14:50, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Alas, not in the budget :( So do you have access to "Dinges Vilnius"? So much stuff in there, it's overwhelming, I could use some guidance on what to scan. The list of illustrations is posted on LT Wikiproject General News. FOr instance there's a nice old picture of the river near the Vingis Pine Forest, is that Zirmunai or Verkiai? Novickas 15:42, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I do. Tuskulėnai image is also from there. Vingis is neither - it is in Vilkpėdė or maybe some other... Iulius 16:17, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Nice work on the pic!! So, there is a picture of the cemetery in the book; it looks somewhat dull, but maybe you could fix that too, with the magical tools? Also, C. Milosz describes the area in the memoirs of his youth during the interwar period, so am planning to put in a sentence or two from there. Novickas 20:33, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Karol Podczaszyński

Dear Iulius

  1. Rybaki is the Polish name for the district of Žirmūnai, and it was called that way even during the Russian Empire rule.
  2. Karol Podczaszyński was born into a Polish family, he felt Polish, spoke Polish, published in Polish etc., and it does not matter, that Polish state did not exist at the moment of his birth. The same way: Lithuanian people born into Lithuanian families in Vilno voivodeship before 1939 were not Poles, but Lithuanians. Am I right?
  3. Be so kind to respect other nations' history, please.

Best regards, Romualdas Vrublevskis or Romuald Wróblewski 00:02, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok, but Rybaki was only a PART OF NOWADAYS ŽIRMŪNAI, not taking the tuskulenai manor! BTW I did not say he was Lithuanian either, besides having Lithuanian-Ruthenian roots. Iulius 06:12, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it was. But if pars pro toto, then the Polish name for "Žirmūnai" is "Rybaki", and for "Žirmūnų seniūnija" is "dzielnica Rybaki". Anyway, the palace was built in a place called Tusculanum (not Žirmūnai), north of "Derewnictwo". Btw: Lithuanian "Žirmūnai" is named for and after Polish "Rybaki", a place where fishermen (used to) live and work (Polish "ryba" is "a fish"). Take care :). Romuald Wróblewski 11:12, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
you are completely wrong here - žirmūnai at first was a NEWLY CONSTRUCTED district of apartment houses, nothing in common with Rybaki. And later the name was applied to the ELDERATE which is much larger than Rybaki. And Rybaki is the name translated from Žvejai in Lithuanian Iulius 19:29, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
