[edit] Rise to Fame
In March 1998 Fogle was a student at Indiana University (IU) and weighed 425 pounds (192 kg). Given his height of 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m), this weight translated into a body mass index (BMI) of 55, well above the Morbidly Obese level (which begins at a BMI of 40).
In his quest to lose weight, Fogle began a 1,000 calorie a day diet consisting of nothing but the food available at his local Subway sandwich shop, which happened to be next door to his apartment building. During this time he also began walking to all of his classes on campus instead of taking the bus.
Within a year Fogle weighed 190 pounds (86 kg), a loss of 235 pounds (106 kg). In addition, he lowered his BMI from 55 to 24½, which is the high end of the Ideal range (BMI ranging from 18.5-25). He graduated from IU with a degree in Management and International Business, and now maintains his weight (at around 180 pounds) with a normal 2,400 calorie-a-day diet.
The story of Fogle's rapid weight loss was reported in his college newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, and their printed account later received attention from the Associated Press and Men's Health magazine. Due to this positive publicity, Subway hired Fogle as its spokesperson.
Subway has used Fogle in a number of television commercials and sponsored in-store appearances throughout the United States. Fogle, who is Jewish, spoke at the grand opening of the first Kosher Subway in Cleveland.
Though Fogle is a visible symbol of the company, Subway (presumably for legal reasons) does not officially endorse his weight-losing diet.
In addition to his work directly for Subway, Fogle also gives regular talks on fitness and healthy eating.
Fogle has been lampooned or otherwise referenced in a number of films and television programs including Saturday Night Live, Robot Chicken, The Sarah Silverman Program, The Simpsons, South Park, and Austin Powers in Goldmember.
[edit] Recent Activities
Fogle is participating in the "Jared & Friends School Tour," sponsored by the American Heart Association. Through this program he has reached out to over 31,000 students, teaching them about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
On August 8, 2006 Fogle's Jared, the Subway Guy: Winning Through Losing: 13 Lessons for Turning Your Life Around, part memoir and part self-help book, was published by St. Martin's Press.
[edit] Early 2007 ad campaign
During early 2007 Fogle appeared with several athletes in a new Subway ad campaign. The television commercials each feature Fogle and an athlete discussing Subway sandwiches. While Jared praises a sandwich as low fat, the athlete states that the sandwich has "more meat". Eventually, the two begin to argue to comic effect. Athletes have included American football player Michael Strahan, WWE Champion John Cena, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart and figure skater Kimmie Meisner.
