D'Eaubonne was formally trained to be a painter and a sculptor. He broke into films working as an assistant to production designer Lazare Meerson. He moved to the US in the late-1950s and remained there until his death in 1971. He received an Oscar nomination in 1951 for his work on Max Ophüls's "La Ronde".
