[edit] Surname
Joaquin was born Joaquin Rafael Bottom. The only Phoenix that was born with the surname "Phoenix" is Summer. They changed their surname legally after the birth of Liberty, and before moving back to the states.
[edit] Um...Dead?
Joaquin Phoenix is not dead. This page has the date of his death as five days ago. I'm not even sure I understand what a Wiki-pranker would hope to achieve here...
[edit] Puerto Rican?
Does being born in Puerto Rico make you Puerto Rican?
Does being born in New York make you a New Yorker? Does being born in the U.S. make you an American? Yes it does, by birth. If a Russian couple moved to the U.S. and had a child here, their child would be an American citizen with all the rights a citizen has even if the parents aren't American. Being born in Puerto Rico makes Joaquin Phoenix a Puerto Rican by "birth". He has never stated otherwise. Besides Puerto Rico is an American territory and the people there are American citizens by birth. This is not about qualifieing as if it were a sporting event, this is about what states his birth certificate which is that he was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Joaquin Phoenix is Puerto Rican "by Birth", he lived his first six years among Puerto Ricans. Jennifer Lopez for example is by ethnicity, such as Frank Sinatra was Italian-American. See Puerto Rican. Tony the Marine 20:48, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mother's ancestry
http://www.river-phoenix.org/friends/heart-phoenix/
First of all, who exactly has that been repudiated by? It's the family's official site
Second, check this profile of Summer Phoenix from the Jewish Journal - http://www.jewishjournal.com/home/searchview.php?id=8397
Not to mention http://www.phoenix-forever.com/history.htm
I'm not sure why you would question the Jewish part but the not the Irish-Spanish part, but I guess that's life Vulturell 22:10, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
Because his last name is Phoenix, a Spanish name. Dunetz isn't a Jewish name, though it sounds like it.
Ummm..... You DO realize Phoenix isn't his real name? I'd bet you anything it isn't anyone's real name, either. I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist. Dunetz is a Mid-European (Germanic, I guess) name. It can be Jewish, obviously, but I'm sure there are non-Jewish people with that name out there, too.Vulturell 00:14, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Phoenix is his birth name (probably given). Check your sources. I didn't suspect his father to be of Irish-Spanish descent because
- A) Phoenix could be derived from a Gaelic (Irish) surname
- B) It could be a Spanish name as well (for unknown reasons)
His fathers official surname Bottom, is also
- A) typically Gaelic or Anglo
I did question his mothers side because
- A) Dunetz isn't typically Jewish
- B) They were Christian missionaries
- C) the sources that claimed this are prone to have mistakes (it's a fact)
I still have my doubts because:
- A) your other source looked amateur
- B) you seem to care too much that his Judaism be reported
Um...ok. As I said, he may have been born "Phoenix" but that wasn't his family's real name by a long-shot. The sources that "claimed this" include the family's official website and an in-depth interview with Summer Phoenix (there are a few more similar interviews with her). Anyway, there's no point to this anymore.Vulturell 00:30, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
Where did the Christian missionary part come into play?
wtf mate
-
- What? You mean when did his mother become a Christian? His mother was born Jewish and was Jewish until she "dropped out of society" at something like 22, divorced her husband, left her family, went hitchhiking, met John Bottom (I think this was 1968 or so), joined the Children of God group (who are not, by any definition, traditional Christians or traditional Christian missionaries). Like many people their age, they became disillusioned with their 'outsider lifestyle' and left the group around 1977 (since Summer says in that interview that she was born after they left the group), I believe, and went to live with Arlyn's parents in Florida. Around this time they generally stopped being religious. The Phoenix's parents are now divorced and their mothered re-married to some guy named Weissberg, so maybe she's back to being Jewish now. All of this detail is really not that relevant to Phoenix's entry as it is now - but if you were interested, that's the story.Vulturell 01:46, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Robbed of an oscar??
that sounds a little biased... just a little.
[edit] Spanish-American
The article says that Joaquin's father was Spanish-Irish. Why is River the only Phoenix in the Spanish-American catagory?--Tacos 19:37, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Happycat93
[edit] joaquin isnt..
puerto rican, he was just raised there, the categories are misleading. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.109.27.88 (talk • contribs).
Do your homework, he was born there! He is Puerto Rican by birth. Next time sign your post Tony the Marine 04:04, 15 July 2006 (UTC) (In case you didn't know Puerto Rican is spelled with a capital "P" and "R")
This link will help you understand the term Puerto Rican. He is Puerto Rican because he was born there. He also has roots similar to modern-day Puerto Ricans because of his European - Spanish background: According to U.S. Census 2000 records the Puerto Rican population is of (81%) European (Spanish) ancestry. Broad U.S. census categories allows the mixed ancestry of most Puerto Ricans to be officially acknowledged. For an example an American in Puerto Rico would choose if he/she is 'Hispanic' or 'Latino' then they would choose from the variety of races. for instance they can choose one or more of the following choices, white, black, or Amerindian/Native American.
[edit] Shoulder?
Does anyone have any information on his shoulder (left, I think)? I first noticed in Signs that one of his shoulders seemed slightly different from the other. It's hard to describe, but it's almost as though he has it drawn in, or stuck out in front of him. This gives him a slightly round-shouldered appearance. Watching Walk the Line, I noticed it in many of his scenes.
We have the story of the scar on his lip, just wondering if there's anything about his shoulder as well.Ingres77 02:44, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I don't think he does... it might have been something slightly added to the movie, otherwise, i haven't noticed much. Maybe someone else has. IronCrow 01:54, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

PETA was not responsable for the documentary, I replaced it for the right organization.
[edit] Question in regard to "Trivia" section
Is the "Trivia" section really necessary? Is it considered encyclopedic? Where are the cited references to these trivia alegations? If the alegations in the trivia section are verifiable facts, shouldn't they be worked into the article itself? Tony the Marine 14:19, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- Your instincts to delete the trivia section and merge information into the main article, where possible, are right on. Check out the official WP trivia guidelines. For additional guidance, see the essay on trivia and the policy statement "WP is not an indiscriminate collection of information". Be bold and edit away!--Vbd | (talk) 19:32, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

does he have the same parents?--HalaTruth(ሐላቃህ) 13:06, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Different Father
I heard that River has a different father from the rest of the Phoenix's. They were invloved with the Children of God Cult for a number of years, and they encourage sex between members, married or not. It could be true, but none the less River, Rain, Joaquin, Liberty, and Summer are the children of John and Heart.
I heard this too, but just wrote it off. And if it were true, who cares? River saw John as his father, and John saw River as his son.
[edit] Don't You Think?
I think that his Jewish roots and his ability to speak Spanish should be mentioned in the article. After all, he is half-Jewish and has been bilingual his entire life.
