Joe Kines (b. July 13, 1944) is an American football coach. He last served as a head coach in the 2006 Petrosun Independence Bowl.
[edit] Biography
Joe Kines was born on July 13, 1944 in a train car that was en route from Cedartown, Georgia to Piedmont, Alabama.[citation needed] Kines spent his childhood in Cedartown, and eventually played three sports at Piedmont High School. His true love was football, but Kines was not good enough to garner the attention of college scouts. After being persuaded by his high school coach to walk on at Jacksonville State University, Kines played well enough to be awarded a scholarship over his final three years. He holds both bachelors and masters degrees from Jacksonville State. Kines is married to the former Rubye Bell and they have one daughter and two grandsons.
[edit] Coaching career
Kines began his coaching career at his alma mater, where he served as assistant coach and defensive coordinator through the 1976 season. In 1977, he received an offer to coach the linebackers at Clemson University, where he coached for the next two seasons. In 1979 Kines became linebackers coach at the University of Florida under Charley Pell. There he spent two years as the linebackers coach, and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1981. In 1985 and 1986, Kines was the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at The University of Alabama before leaving with Ray Perkins to the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He served as the Buc’s linebacker coach from 1987-90. Kines returned to college coaching in 1991 as the defensive coordinator at The University of Arkansas and was promoted to head coach of the Razorbacks in 1992 when Jack Crowe was fired following a season-opening loss to The Citadel. He guided the Razorbacks to a 45-7 victory over South Carolina in the Hogs' first game in the SEC in his first game after taking over for Crowe, and closed the season with a 30-6 rout of archrival LSU in the first game between the schools since the Cotton Bowl following the 1965 season.
He was Arkansas’ assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1993-94 to Danny Ford before moving on to The University of Georgia. There he served as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator from 1995-98 and as assistant head coach in 1999. He also coached the defensive ends while at Georgia. In 2000, Kines left Athens to become linebackers coach at Florida State University under Bobby Bowden.
Kines returned for his second stint as defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama in 2003. His first season back, in 2003, was quite unsuccessful. The defense struggled much of the year and gave up a three touchdown lead in the fourth quarter in an eventual loss to Arkansas, and also gave up a 4th and 19 to Tennessee in overtime when the Tide would have won with a stop. As a result, most Alabama fans demanded that Kines be fired. However, Shula remained steadfast in his belief that Kines was the man for the job and retained him for the 2004 season.
2004 marked the breakout year for the Tide defense. While the offense struggled due to injuries to skill position players, Kines' defense held strong and helped lead Alabama to a bowl game. The 2005 season brought another strong showing. Again, despite an offense that struggled greatly, the Tide defense excelled, leading Alabama to a 10-2 season and a victory in the Cotton Bowl.
Alabama slumped to a 6-6 finish in 2006 and lost a fifth-straight game to archrival Auburn University. Head coach Mike Shula was fired on November 27, and Kines was named interim head coach while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement. A week after Shula's firing a reporter asked Kines if he wanted to stay on at Alabama as defensive coordinator in 2007, Kines responded "Do you like to eat?!". Kines' team fell short in his first and only game as interim head coach of Alabama, losing to Oklahoma State 34-31 in the PetroSun Independence Bowl on a field goal with 13 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter. Like all of Shula's assistants, he was not re-hired by new coach Nick Saban. However, he did not want to leave Tuscaloosa because of his love for the University of Alabama. "My next move is going to be to heaven," Kines said. He was hired as an officer with Tide Pride, which is responsible for helping to fund scholarships, generating revenue for capital improvements, and supporting the "Million Dollar Band," among other activities.
