"In May 2002 at the Cambridge Union he stated that he would like to shoot Scottish Member of Parliament George Galloway and the British journalist Robert Fisk."

Why?

Does this belong in an encyclopedia article?

Not without context, imo. See non-encyclopedic for further discussion on this type of query. Ellsworth 22:33, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You call "both of whom are accused of sympathising with Islamic terrorists" context? It's pure BS coming from a minority of people, really.

This discussion is playing up the ethnic origin of a 4th generation American.

[edit] Political conviction

Where does John Malkovich stand on the political spectrum? Based on his comments about Fisk and Galloway, one would presume he's on the right. - Quirk 15:24, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

I came here to ask a very similar question. What are his politics (if they are a matter of public record, at least)? Whilst I'm here anyway, a second question, why is he noted as leaving France? Is this encyclopaedic, or just trivia? Telsa 15:21, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] changed birthplace

I've changed John Malkovich's birthplace from Benton to Christopher -- imdb sez Christopher. If this is absolutely wrong please feel free to correct me. Thanks. --I. Neschek 19:33, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Sabotage

Somebody™ has been having fun with this page. Reverted to Revision as of 18:39, 4 September 2005. --Aasmunds 05 Sep 2005, 12:40 UTC

[edit] Absolute Freedom

Malk's remarks about Fisk & Galloway are protected by the absolute right of free speech that everyone enjoys throughout the world at the present time. Anyone can say anything without fear. 205.188.116.13 00:36, 20 September 2005 (UTC)Col. Sebastian Moran

This is quite true, indeed. However, slander is not. Though we may have differing opinions, I take this to be slander, as I have listened to him, personally, and do not find him to be a sympathizer of violent people, whether they be Muslim or Christian, for that matter. Opinionated, yes, but then again aren't we all? :) Besides this comment has little relevence over one that would instead note the quote Malkovich actually said. Perhaps, the press took it and ran?

[edit] eupehmemism?

As a boy, Malkovich was reportedly heavy set. By high school, he had transformed himself physically and was a star athlete.

This appears to be a euphemism -- in which case it's absurd. You might as well say he was "big-boned" or "of traditional build". You don't "transform yourself" from being heavy-set. If he was fat, say he was fat.

I totally agree. Fat is fat, or large, or big, but not "heavy set", (which is an Americanism anyway).

[edit] John Malkovich ORIGIN

John Malkovich's father is of Croatian descent. Malkovich has visited Croatia lately, and there's pictures of him with the Croatian President Stipe Mesic.

He is a Croatian-American. Jagoda 1 04:18, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

As per The Serbian Americans by Jerome Kisslinger, Chelsea House Publishers New York 1990 pages 99-101 John Malkovich is a Serb. The consulting editors for this book were:
Ann Orlov, Managing editor, Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups, Harvad MA
M.Mark Stolarik - President, The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, Philadelphia
David M. Reimers, Professor of History, New York University
James F Watts, Chairman, History Department, City College of New York

[edit] Origin

If it is Croatia that his family came from then there is no problem in mentioning it. I was curious as to when the Malkoviches invaded the USA but thankfully, someone (unnamed) wrote to me saying it was before 1900. In that case, it is better to say Austria-Hungary unless the region was a part of the Illyrian Provinces (France), that which was taken from Venice. The trouble with the Balkan region and surrounding area is that you've been fought over more than anyone else in Europe. Everybody wants influence over you but the Slavic nations refuse to assimilate the overlords. Fair play to you, if my ancestors had been the same, I'd know how to speak Welsh! :)

I'll wipe out 'Yugoslavia' since it came into use from 1929, long after Malkovich Clan occupied Universal Studios! But bare in mind one thing. Coming from Croatia and being Slavic need not necessarily make one 'Croat', nor 'Serb' for that matter. Pre-1900 was a strong pro-Slavic unity typical among ordinary folk and you had peoples using names as Morlach, Slavonian, Slav Dalmatian, Slovene (for regions in Croatian Istria), Krajishnak (NOT Krajina-Serbs but indigenous Catholics living in areas adjacent to Croatia-Slovenia borderzones, all sorts). See what you think! Celt 29-12-05

I'm sort of a local, and know some of the sonufavitches. The local articles I have seen say they came from Croatia before 1900 to work the mines northern Minn, then moved to Franklin County. There are Greek Orthodox Churches and Catholic Churches in Franklin County, but I never heard if they belonged to either. I know there were Serbians in the Charlie Birger Gang. I'm pretty sure none of the sonufavitches give a rat's asshole about this controversy. They are more American than 90% of you.

I'm glad here it doesn't get as hot as some of the Serb vs Croat debates between their hardliners. One day it will emerge that all of Franjo Tudjmans ancestors were Serbs and Slobodan Milosevic was only adopted after his real parents abandoned him at birth, and they were probably Croats, but he never knew! Jokes aside, we can all agree one thing. Serb or Croat is still Slavic, as oppose to Hungarian or Italian - so Malkovich the name does show this. We can omit Yugoslavia even though it does mean 'Southern' Slavic as oppose to Poland and Ukraine which is northern Slavic (further divided west/east), but Karlovac is indeed present-day Croatia so we can say just that, present-day Croatia! I hope everyone is happy with this. Jordovan 31/12/2005

[edit] Thanks

Jordovan thanks fo your information, realy ;O)

[edit] Puppeteer?

Is he really a puppeteer, or is that just a plot line in Being John Malkovich? SmartGuy 20:33, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] He said many ttimmes that he doesnt know a single word in Croatian language

How is he a Croat then,he first visited Croatia at age of 50Dzoni 22:16, 20 April 2006 (UTC) He speaks some Croatian words. He said he is Croatian...Sibenik

(Of Croatian ancestory perhaps?)

So when you were born, and didn't speak Croatian for the first year or so of your life, were you not a Croat? He's American (which is a nationality) and a Croat (which is an ethnicity), much like Robert De Niro is Italian and Kurt Vonnegut is German (but both are Americans). Unigolyn 06:20, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dyslexic, stupid or just plain dumb?

I have deleted the hole part which reds this:

However, Malkovich had initially misinterpreted a line from Fisk's "The Great War for Civilization." The sentence from the book (p. 501) actually reads, "If this was a war on terror, I wrote in my paper that awful spring, then Jesus was not born in Bethlehem." This phrase appears to be a variation on "if this is true, I'll eat my hat" - raising the issue of whether Malkovich is, "dyslexic, stupid or just plain dumb," as he has been described on a popular political blog.[2]

Because I think it is not encyclopedic. It would be nice if someone could rewrite it into a more serious text and readd it. --DocBrown 22:32, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] References

Why are the references not visible when you click on editing the page? There's an HTML link saying that the reference section is supposed to be closed but I don't understand the reason for this. And wow, I thought Malkovich was unusual before. Learning about his homicidal fantasies has only increased this belief-which is surprising (obviously that's just a tangent, not at all content-related).

[edit] Bush support unsubstantiated by ref

I removed the following line: and - confirming his support for Bush's wars in the Middle East, preceding the quote about Hitchens. The Guardian interview says nothing about Bush, or his opinions on the Middle Eastern conflicts, and the only mention of Iraq is in reference to France's government. --64.24.181.159 03:01, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Politics

I've removed the reference to Malkovich's political views. This is because I don't think they're particularly relevant to his life. He's an actor. Please do restore this section if you think it's the right thing to do. I do not. --Tony Sidaway
