Biography
Dr John Wilkinson BSc PhD DIC MRSC C Chem
Dr Wilkinson program led Europe’s first Herbal Medicine BSc degree from its beginning in 1994 at Middlesex University, UK. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at Middlesex University, where he undertakes research into the uses of herbal medicines for use in the cosmetic, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industries.
He also lectures on the scientific aspects of herbal medicines at Oxford University’s Medical School.
He specializes in studying the phytochemistry and pharmacological effects of crude plant extracts and probing their inherent synergy effects by using a unique combination of molecular bio activity studies and computer derived fuzzy logic systems. He also works on the immune modulating and anti oxidant properties of herbal extracts, and their use as potential anti HIV and anti cancer treatments for phytopharmaceutical use. He is on the board of several peer reviewed natural product journals.
He is also director of Herbal Sciences International Ltd, which carries out R&D work on developing new innovations in the natural products industry. Current discoveries include the development of new head lice treatment, and the use of Sage in the treatment of Memory Loss.
The company also carries out consultancy and contract research work on behalf of natural product companies on new or novel natural products. Previous projects include the production of a 150 page report on the potential exploitation of Australian plants, as a source of new nutraceuticals, on behalf of the Australian government and the development of a unique new anti oxidant energy drink that contains an extract of Chinese ants. The company also conducts bioactivity studies and complex analysis of herbal extracts as well as providing scientific expert reports to the Medical Control Agency, the Novel Foods Committee and the Advertising Standards Agency on specific new herbal ingredients for use in the cosmetic, functional food and pharmaceuticals. Dr Wilkinson is frequently interviewed by the media about the scientific proof and traditional folklore use of natural products and has conducted over 100 interviews over the past few years appearing on National and International TV, Radio, Newspapers and Magazines. Finally he is list owner of the internet based Phytopharmacognosy group, which was established in 1995 and has 1500 expert members worldwide and he is also the natural medicine expert on the GSK sponsored Cold and Flu council.

Hello John and welcome. I see Muriel Gottrop got too you before me. Please follow her advice. Maybe you could give contributions to List of herbs wher a lot of medicinal herbs are listed but no specific articles exist yet. On the other hand the article you have submited for the moment doesn't quite stand up to the Wiki criteria as it is more of a publicity than informative. As title it is quite OK but the contents must become more informative on medicinal herbs instead of who and where this subject is taught. I hope you don't mind these observations. If you need any help in editing etc... to make it a NPOV article which is informative don't hesitate to ask me. Vanderesch 15:01, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)
